These are the six contenders that have been announced for the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. The nominees are athletes Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, cricketer Ben Stokes, Formula 1's Lewis Hamilton, footballer Raheem Sterling and rugby union's Alun Wyn Jones.

In a surprise twist to the nomination reveal, the nominees were introduced by other known celebrities.

The video can be watched above here:

The BBC's Sports Personality Of The Year (SPOTY) award is given out once a year to a British sports man OR women that have excelled in their sport through the year.

Although the nominations are decided by a panel of experts, the actual final decision is left to the voting public who can phone in on the night to decide the winner.

Voting will be open to the public during the Sports Personality programme on Sunday, 15th December.

There is no doubt that all nominees have excelled in their field, but for me, there is only one winner.
