Early April Garden Journal - Swedes, Purple Beans, and More
From posting daily on Hive to my efforts lately, it sure seems like I'm having a hard time keeping up with Hive! Between road tripping, surfing and just enjoying the EAster sunshine, I'm quite rarely online, though I do try to jump on and reblog and upvote for @gardenhive.
I've got about ten minutes before Jamie gets home and takes up my time - harumph, husbands - so I'll try to smash this post out fastish. We are still getting a bit of food out the garden - eggplants, green and purple beans, zucchini, manarins, tomato, and apples, beetroot and silverbeet.
Most of the zucchini is getting white now so we had a job of it pulling it all out. To be honest this huge vine was only good for food for the chooks and covering the soil to keep it cool, rather than good eating zucchini - but it still was useful.
The dagga is huge now and finally flowering - what an autumn special!
Definitely time to pick the fennel seeds - they're great in all kinds of dishes and I don't know why we don't use them more. Do you use fennel seeds for anything? I really love them.
The eggplant (both the finger style and the large ones) are still flowering and giving fruit but it's not long for the world as it will get cold soon enough. I've always tried to overwinter them but never with much luck.
The swedes are going great guns as are the purple beans. I really must get some more in the ground before it's too late. Jamie dug me over a section of garden this morning to plant some yellow beetroot. Coriander is popping up everywhere - yum. I do love the purple beans - they're a beaitful plant. A shame the colour goes when you cook them!
A few seedlings survived my week away - beetroot and kale and onions. The brassica got eaten by bugs - grrr. I've ordered some garlic cloves as mine got slaughtered by black mould last year and so did a lot of local people's so there is none to be barteredlocally unfortunately.
Just picked the last of the apples - they've been amazing to eat daily and even Jamie is eating them. Every time I eat one it reminds me of Dad - he ate a daily apple, core and all, all his life. It did NOT keep the doctor away unfortunately but he did enjoy them.
I've been trying to eat as much veggies from my garden without buying any which has been great. Tonight will be an indian paneer curry made with garden vege and tomatoes and green capsicum (I doubht they'll go red now with the amount of warm days we have left, though it's going to be 30 tomorrow).
I think it's the best year for the garden we have ever had - all the hard work has definitely paid off.

Do you also prepare paneer at home ? I am sure, it will be best with home grown veges.
You are having a great time offline - nice to see you garden update - you have quite a large garden. It is great that the hard work pays off. Although I have a small garden - I understand the nice feeling of eating what one grows. The zucchini vine is humongous - although now white I hope you could harvest a lot.
A curry for dinner with garden veggies sounds great.

Look at those goodies. Just nothing beats homegrown. I'm impatiently waiting for the first harvests here! Probably another month or so until we really see what's going to flourish!
The apple connection to your dad brings to mind my annual strawberry picking (hoping to find time to go soon!) as a connection to my grandfather. Can't go picking without thinking of him. 💚
