The Mindset Of A Defender
You get up in the morning, have a shower, eat breakfast and then go to the office. You do this every day. You do this on autopilot. That is like routine. Now tomorrow you need to travel and go somewhere else. You have to catch a bus or train early in the morning.
So you are prepared to get up early and pack all the necessary stuff. When you travel, you are more aware of it. You do not do this every day. You notice your surroundings carefully compared to every day when you go to the office.
If we talk about self-defense and the mindset of a defender, a defender is more aware of his/her surroundings. Situational awareness puts you in a better position. In case something goes wrong, you can make your move earlier to protect yourself. And that's the best thing you can do.
You see someone's behavior, attitude, and the way he talks to you, he can be your possible attacker. You can keep your hands up in a way that is not obvious to notice that you are ready to fight or defend yourself. You can do this only if you are aware of your surroundings.
A defender is proactive. For example, how to defend yourself against a knife attack. Here you see the attacker puts his hand into his pocket and draws something. When you notice that the attacker is drawing his weapon, it is better to stop the attacker right there. Once the attacker has a knife in his hand, it will be more difficult.
Or, if you want to run away as a defense, you will not wait there till he completely draws his weapon. If you just wait when the attacker is about to attack, the attacker will hit you and it will be too late to defend yourself against that attack.
If you practice martial art or you are a fighter, and you think you can beat anyone easily, that can become your vulnerability. You will often underestimate your opponent. If the attacker does not know any martial art, it does not mean he will not be able to hurt you. The attacker can attack you randomly and he can get used to it that way. A defender does not underestimate the attacker.
When we talk about a defender's mindset, a defender does not only parry and block to defend against the attacker's strike. Sometimes attacking is the best defense. Based on the situation, you have to take action to protect yourself. A defender does not fight to show off, his intention is to defend himself.
