Mike Tyson Vs Jake Paul Break Records

CBS Sports and Yahoo Finance is reporting that 150 Million Netflix subscribers tuned in to watch the Tyson vs Jake Paul event. To put that in perspective the Apollo 11 moon landing was said to boast between 120-150 million viewers, depending on source. The Super bowl somewhere south of 125 million. The events gate ($17.8M) set a new combat sports record, the biggest boxing gate outside of Las Vegas in U.S. history.

Assuming 2.5 viewers per household, Helfstein estimated about 150 million global viewers tuned in to watch the Tyson-Paul event. That's greater than the 124 million US viewers who watched the 2024 Super Bowl, the highest viewership for any US broadcast.

The analyst, who has an Outperform rating on shares, called out Netflix's ability to generate massive viewership, "suggesting the company will be successful with advertising around live events."

RentMoney's Thoughts [Spoilers Ahead]

As many know Jake Paul bested Mike Tyson in their boxing bout. Rumors are circling of a fix but I see no evidence of that. What I seen was an almost 60 year old warrior showing his age inside of the boxing ring verses a man half his age. I for one am grateful for the opportunity to see a great like Mike Tyson enter the ring one last time and even more grateful that no one was seriously hurt. Reports are saying that Mike Tyson earned 20 Million for the bout. Jake Paul managed to pocket double that and take home 40 Million. Those numbers might be shocking to some because one would think Mike Tyson would be the boxer getting the bigger purse. However if we take into account that Jake Paul's company MVP helped produce the event; that could be the reason for the purse differences. The co-main event was something else. Amanda Serrano vs Katie Taylor 2 was the co-main event and I believe it to be an instant classic. A massive cut opened up just above the eye of Amanda Serrano in the fourth round. Personally I thought the bout was going to end there but the doctor and ref let it go on. Even more surprising is Amanda Serrano somehow managed to get to the final bell regardless of the accidental headhunt that caused the cut. Lots of controversy has surrounded this co-main event including many saying that the judges got it wrong when they announced Katie Taylor as the winner. Personally I thought the right fighter won, power-shots + damage over volume this time around. I don't want to give out too many details just in case readers haven't seen the event yet. The replay can be seen on Netflix which has monthly subscriptions offers for as low as $6.99.

It's mind boggling to me how many were interested in this even enough to watch it. I only yesterday found out who won xD

Tyson even at 58 years old is a massive draw. The bout was to take place some months ago but Tyson had a medical scare. I believe he wasn't fully recovered come fight night. He was in there with a knee brace on.

It's crazy that the fight was allowed. A nearly 60 year old man should not be allowed to fight a guy half his age.

Beyond that, while it may not have been fixed, Tyson also didn't appear to really be trying very hard and was just trying to go the distance to get his paycheck. Paul also seemed to trying to extend the fight rather than actually box. Some have suggested that he just didn't want to humiliate Tyson by knocking him out and that's why he didn't go for the big punches, but knowing Paul, it's hard to believe that extending the fight and making a show wouldn't have been primary in his mind.

I agree with allot of that.

I think it would have been a much different fight if Mike Tyson didn't get sick and the original date postponed. Tyson had a Knee brace on and stumbled on his way to the ring, I believe Tyson never fully recovered from his health scare that postponed the original fight date. I'm one of the ones that feel as Jake Paul pulled punches/played it safe in the later rounds. I believe Jake Paul realized the backlash he would get if he did indeed score a brutal KO. I also believe Jake Paul recognized he was easily ahead on the score cards so why risk getting KO'd himself. Tyson had the will but not legs to close the distance. At some point it did look like Mike Tyson was just trying to make it to the final bell instead of trying to win. Rumor has it Mike Tyson's had a tiered bout agreement for payscale: the more rounds he fought the higher his pay. And still undefeated: Father Time!

I'm not much of a boxing fan so I did not watch the fight even though I am a Netflix subscriber. But I do remember watching him when I was a kid and I think he looks great without a shirt for being 58.

I think its crazy to think that Netflix allowed its userbase to watch this for no additional charge. This could of easily been a $40+ PPV event and that's on the low end of the PPV possibilities.

It's incredible how much money a fight like this can generate.

I didn't watch. I heard Tyson had no legs. Too bad for many this may be the only live fight of Tyson they have ever seen. The legend and the controversies around Tyson are much more known than his incredible fighting in his prime 🙁 I also heard there were massive streaming problems. Did you watch live? Did you have any problems with the stream?

Good to see a rentmoney post 😉

I tuned in live and with the first sign of poor quality I paused the event and waited 30 minutes before resuming. This stopped any streaming issues for me. I know of a couple who said they had to log out and back in and after doing so the streaming quality got better. To be fair 150* million watchers is allot and this was Netflix's first attempted at broadcasting a live event. I think for the most part they did a great job. No legs indeed, Tyson stumbled on his way to the ring and had a knee brace on. I don't think he fully recovered from his health scare that postponed the original fight date.
