Happy Belated Hivelander Halloween

IMG_4345 (4).jpeg

It has been a super busy week for me, Hivelanders.

From Halloween, to ice skating, and Canadian college championship football. Not to worry. I wasn't actually playing the football, but my alma mater, the UBC Thunderbirds. The weather called for rain, but the skies cleared just as the game began and held off to just after. The T-birds were taking on the Manitoba Bisons, a first place and last place match-up, respectfully.

Should have been a galette gallop for the T-Birds, but the Bisons definitely gave it their best cake-race type effort and led the UBC well into the third quarter.

The Bisons did not come alone. They brought a sizeable cheering session, and the Manitoba fans certainly made themselves heard. They had a lot to cheer about until the very end. Melded together there was considerable excitement at Thunderbird stadium for an odd hybrid called a bike-bird.

Then a beautiful bald eagle soared above and the winds changed. An eagle is the closest I think we could get to an actual thunderbird. The T-birds hiked up their athletic garters with a touch down from the quarterback no-less, and pulled off the win, sending them to the Hardy Cup Finals next probably very rainy Saturday. Good on the Bikes though; they didn't give up with even a second left in the game, making for an incredibly thrilling game.

Halloween was Tuesday and a success. It was a lovely to get out there once the work of pumpkin carving and costume construction had all been done. Minime had insisted that although he would still dress-up that he was now too old to trick or treat. Best laid plans collapsed in the face of all those free goodies, and he did indeed hold his pillowcase ... okay Spirit of Halloween bag ... aloft and sing out the familiar refrain of all sugar addicts come October 31st. The merchants of Vancouver's Yaletown hosted their annual trick or treating event, and Minime joined in while I trailed after like an obliging tag-a-long. This year even Chewbacca was sighted. Darth Vader is a lot shorter than I thought.

It is a delight to see all the families dressed up. I particularly like when a family goes themed. Minime and I always pair up our costumes. In past years, we have been Marvel Superheroes, Jedis, Pooh and Tigger, and even Thing One and Thing Two. Total mommy win.

This year we went out of this world. Minime chose very early on that he wanted to be a Grey alien.

The task then came for me to choose something complimentary. I didn't want to wear a mask and so instead pulled from the Star Trek Universe of aliens.

I thought about going as an Andorrean from the Enterprise world, but did not relish the idea of painting myself blue. Instead I stayed with the same planet but went underground and into the cold and chose to be an Aenar-Andorrean hybrid. It meant I could go with white face paint and a blue wig and dress warmly and in comfy shoes, always a plus on a cold and a long October night.

After Yaletown, we headed over to the Alberni Street Urbanfare for Halloween Halftime and some charcuterie. I may also have a had a glass of white wine, or two. They were small glasses.

Two travellers exploring on a planet not their own need some subsistence before going where no alien has gone before, or even just through the hood and then across the Burrard Bridge to check out the decorated houses of Kitsilano.

I really enjoy when folks get into the spirit of a season or festivity. Not so sure my fur-kin feels the same, but Seven did oblige long enough for a photo or two. Imagine the sweetest, most gently cat and then imagine some more, and you will come close to imagining our tabby.

A Happy Belated Halloween, Hivelanders. May Tween'mas be a rewarding month for you and your loved-ones.

Yes ... Tween'mas that is what you call the time between Halloween and Christmas ... Thanksgiving if you are American.

Merry Tween'mas, Hivelanders.

Aenar-Andorrean hybrid good choice! 🩵

Yea getting all that paint off would be a headache! I didn’t dress up much this year but Ashlee was a poodle 🐩 for work and I gave out candy with a half ass wig and sunglasses saying I was Joey Ramone . Only got away with it cause of the 6’4 hight and the leather jacket. In recent years I was Drago from rocky 4 & Billie Idle 🎸

Cheers my friend! Glad to see you enjoying the season!
