"Special Chai" from Dunkin' Donuts - Diary of a Refugee from Ukraine
Winter arrived already which meant time to indulge myself in several cups of coffee every single day. I am aware of the effects of having caffeine in my body. Even though I am not allowed to drink coffee due to specific medications, I just cannot help or control myself. I even tried drinking tea but at one point, I don't feel like drinking tea anymore. It's an old addiction so finding an alternative is tough against coffee.
I used to be fancy in terms of having coffee but not anymore. I am more of a latte and cappuccino person so they are available almost everywhere. Before when I was in Ukraine, I used to drink 3-4 cups of coffee per day but now every day I am having only a cup of coffee, sometimes 2 cups if it is cold. The place where I am currently staying, around me there are a lot of coffee shops. I tried coffee from some coffee shops near me but my experience was not so satisfactory. Obviously, they are better than Starbucks coffee but compared to the price, I have discovered that it's better to have coffee at home rather than spending money on outside coffee. It's not about the price only, it's about the quality of the coffee and unfortunately, I didn't find much difference between coffee from the outside and home.
Many of you might already be familiar with Dunkin' Donuts which is currently known as Dunkin'. It's an American multinational coffee and donut company. Well, at first I thought it was a donut shop because when it comes to buying donuts, people always talk about Dunkin' Donuts. I know they have coffee and other beverages section but people always prefer to Starbucks than Dunkin' I guess.
Just before Halloween, I thought to buy some donuts for myself. I was craving for sweets and I thought it would be a good idea to have some donuts for myself. So, my first thought was to go to Dunkin to buy donuts and come back. The shop of Dunkin is not far from my place, it only takes 10 minutes to walk so it's very convenient. So, while ordering donuts, I thought to check their hot beverage menu as well. While looking at the menu, I discovered something nice and it was "Special Chai". Seeing that on the menu made me curious and I decided to check the ingredients and what makes that Chai special. For those who don't know what is Chai, it is another name for Tea. Many people from different countries name tea Chai; even in Ukraine people call Tea "Chai".
Anyway, after seeing the ingredients, I realized that Special Chai has some specific flavors. This special Chai is also known as Masala Tea/ Chai in India and in the Arab world, they call it only Chai. This Chai is made with thick milk and tea, and cardamom. Some people use cinnamon sometimes for extra flavor. In my country, we call this tea Cardamom Chai. Normally you will find this Chai mostly in Indian shops so seeing this Chai at Dunkin' made me so curious and I wanted to try the Chai at that moment with my donut.
Not every person can make Masala Chai easily because the ratio of milk and tea has to be perfect otherwise flavors won't be there. Too much thick milk can be the reason for losing the flavor of Tea and also the flavor of cardamom is very intense so you have to be very careful about the amount of cardamom. I am not good at making Masala tea because most of the time either my tea becomes bitter or too much thick milk.
My expectation was not that high from Dunkin' as I have tasted Masala Chai in different Indian shops/cafes and to be honest, I didn't enjoy any of the Chai. For the commercial reason, nobody uses the right amount of milk in Masala Chai.
While waiting for my Chai order, I decided to look at the donuts that were displayed. Pretty cool decorations and topping on the donuts because of Halloween and I assumed why kids love these donuts so much, especially on Halloween month. Actually, they looked adorable and appealing with different toppings and decorations, kinda spooky vibes, from a business perspective it's a brilliant idea for donuts I would say.
So like a child, I ordered some donuts depending on the decorations and flavours. I personally prefer Banana and vanilla filling always so it was a must.
Just look at all the cute donuts...
Finally, my Special Chai arrived. I was neutral before taking a sip of Chai. It was good, really good. It was a little bit sweet but the flavor was really good. I have chosen semi-skimmed milk because I was skeptical about this Chai because it's from a franchise. The flavor of the cardamom was there, not intense and the flavor of the tea was relaxing, a perfect drink for the winter. It was really nice enjoying that coffee while sitting outside in the central area of Almere, Netherlands.
Later I also tried this Chai with full cream milk but I prefer semi-skimmed milk. The cost of a medium-sized cup of this tea is 3 euros. I don't know if it's expensive or not but compared to Starbucks coffee, this Chai is way better.
I finally found a place for myself to sit and drink something nice. I try to go there at least once a week just to have that Chai. Donuts are optional, I am not a fan of donuts.
Considering my mental health condition, it is pleasant to go out to have a cup of Chai and spend some time outside sitting just to enjoy the atmosphere and people.
Love

I think you really need to try and work towards your ability to reduce the coffee because of your health.. This place looks very beautiful and attractive
I should try but it's an old addiction. Like after waking up, I need caffeine to start my day. Like you said, at least I should reduce if I cannot stop. Thank you, the shop is nice, like other franchise shops... I personally liked their coffee mugs and water bottles, they are cute...
Thanks for taking the time to read my post...
Yeah, that's why I used the word try.. I know it's never easy to take something that is part of one's life just like that..you are welcome.. I also love the coffee mug also, it's enticing. You are welcome anytime
Yes that was the seasonal coffee cup for Halloween, now they stooped giving that cute paper cup... Thank you again...
Ohh! Why do they stop giving the cup??. You are welcome friend
That design was for Halloween, now they are back to their old design. Probably during the Holiday season, they will start giving something nice...
Let's hope so too
Hey @priyanarc
It's great seeing you here 😁
I'm going through that phase too. It could change in the future, but right now, I just don't want it.
Isn't that a tempting place to be? I've never seen a Dunkin Donuts that's this fancy, but I visited a few outlets in the Philippines, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good their coffee is:)
Thank you, I finally found something to write here. I used to write about coffee when I was in Ukraine I remember...
Same.. I can have a cup of tea but it has to be good. But I always prefer coffee...
Really? I thought everywhere their outlets were the same. This one is bigger compared to the Amsterdam one and less crowded. I only tasted their Special Chai, I will try their coffee next time...
Thank you and have a great week ...
A few years ago, I ordered a chai not realising it was tea. I'm a coffee drinker so it was a shock when I tried it. I couldn't finish it. My dad used to call bad tea "weasel piss". I'm afraid my chai was. That's what you get for trying something new. 😁 I'm glad you enjoyed yours though.
I used to drink tea when I was in Bangladesh because Bangladeshi people prefer tea to coffee because it's a hot country. When I moved to Ukraine, I became addicted to coffee, and then coffee addiction started. I can drink tea but very specific, I am not a fan of tea. But I like Masala Chai but it has to be made perfectly :D.
I can imagine your experience, tea has to be perfect otherwise it's just bitter water...
When I was young, tea was cheaper. It wasn’t until my cousin came to live with us and she paid board that my mum started to buy coffee. My cousin drank coffee and my mum thought because she was paying her way, she must get coffee in for her. That is where my addiction for coffee began. I will always be grateful!
What a lovely story... By the way what kind of coffee do you like? I mean expresso, americano, or just normal coffee...
I like a black americano. I had a phase of telling the barista I'd like a black americano and they'd always ask me if I wanted a jug of milk with it. I kept thinking why would I ask for it black if I wanted milk? It used to drive me nuts.
I don’t mind most coffees really, but I tend to have coconut or almond milk in the others. As long as it's called coffee I'm not too fussed. 🙂
Many people like black Americano and I heard it's good though I am a cappuccino and latte person. I like milk. I also like a very unique coffee from Starbucks and that is hazelnut macchiato with less sugar. Coffee can be fancy though :D and I like fancy coffee sometimes :D...
I like macchiato as well. I've only had a few but enjoyed it. I feel as though I can taste the coffee more if there's no milk.
Coffee is really good and having the thought of doing without it is difficult but you really need to find a way to avoid taking at least for the sake of your health.
Yes, and that's why I have slowly started having Masala Tea so that I can reduce my coffee habit. During winter time it's tough but probably I should try hot chocolate instead...
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Take care
You are welcome 🤗 and it's good to know you are working towards it. Do enjoy the rest of the week.
Thank you, I wish you a good week...
It's always awesome when we prepare for disappointment with food and get surprised. You've made me want to go try one of these, Chai is so perfect in the fall. 🍂
The doughnuts are super cute, it was fun to look through the case with you 😁 Thanks for sharing!
Chai and donuts are a good combo during the fall season. The current trend is Pumpkin spice latte; I like it but it is too sweet. I prefer this Chai because I like the fragrance and flavor of Cardamom. Hot Chai and Fall weather is a perfect combo in my opinion...
Thank you... I really appreciate your time and support...
I did not know Dunkin' Donuts. I checked and found that they had withdrawn from Japan in 1998. There are Mister Donut and Krispy Kreme Donut in Japan.
It is suddenly getting cold here too, and reading your post made me want to drink a cup of chai. Not sure where I can find good chai or if I can brew it myself... but I will look into it.
You can brew it if you find the proper tea for it. It's not that hard to make this Chai at home if you have milk, tea, cardamom, cinnamon(optional). You will find a lot of videos on YouTube. Cardamom tea/ Cardamom Chai is famous in the Arab world, you can try Masala Chai (Indian) as well...
Sounds like a cinnamon-infused chai would be good for winter!
Thanks, I'll look for a video on youtube😃
That would be a good idea...
I will eat all the donuts you don't want, then, because I love them! 😁
I've had Masala Chai, but never at Dunkin' so I might have to try it sometime. The closest one to me is a 20-minute drive in a direction I seldom go, but I will try to remember next time I head that way.
There are enough fans of the coffee at Dunkin' that the brand is carried in supermarkets near me. I seldom spend the extra money on it, though, unless I'm actually at a Dunkin' location.
I'm glad you're treating yourself to something special at times, braving the winter, and doing your best to heal and stay positive. Blessings to you, dear one... 💗
Ah then you are familiar with Dunkin' and I would suggest you try the special Chai but tell them to put in less sugar (if you are not a sugar person) otherwise it is sweet. In Masala Chai, Indians put some herbs and spices. Cardamom Chai is more famous in the Arab world. I am in between, I add cardamom, cinnamon, and full creme milk when I prepare for myself. I prefer cardamom Chai more than Masala Chai to be honest because not everyone can make proper Masala Chai. The best Chai I tasted in India... 😃
Let me know your feedback if you drink Chai from Dunkin'.
Wow beautiful and specially sweet , yummy raining mouth.
Thank you...

I never used to be a coffee person drinking cappuccino, latte and hot chocolate at the maximum, but somehow, both cafes and donut shops do have an energy apart that always changes someone's mood whether they are just looking or ordering something. At the opposite pole I am with the donuts which always represented my guilty pleasure, so do keep in mind that your post did a great job making me want some early in the morning while reading your post, haha. And no problem at all with that! It's always a good idea to start the day with something sweet as it might influence the rest of the day, who knows?
Starting the morning with something sweet is not a crime in fact it motivates and influences the whole day. That's what I believe. I ignore Dunkin' often because I know I will end up buying some donuts which is actually not good for the entire day. Too much sugar. But yes, coffee/tea with sweetness feels like heaven in the morning (Because I am addicted to caffeine).
Mine too and I always need something sweet with caffeine and it's a huge crime if it is everyday routine 🤣
I am happy to know that you liked this post, it means a lot to me...
❤️🙏🏻
This doesn't sound like it has too much caffeine in it. A perfect substitute for your normal coffee :) ...

No, it doesn't have caffeine like coffee, in autumn or winter, this tea is really good and provides coziness. But yes, if you don't like cardamom, you won't like this Chai at all...
Thank you for your time...
Seeing these photos made me want to eat some donuts. They look very delicious and with a delicious coffee the perfect company.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.
Yes, those donuts look delicious and I guess they had a good business moment during Halloween because of those donuts. Quite appealing and delicious-looking donuts. Kids loved them a lot...
I used to be a donut fan, I couldn't imagine a banana-flavored filled donut, sounds like a great idea indeed.
It's very good that you have found a quiet place to rest for a moment a week.
Banana-flavored filling with vanilla icing is just heaven, so good to eat and I just love to eat it. I don't care about the sugar at that time...
Yes, it is nice to sit there, and look outside while having a cup of Chai...
I love tea, but to me tea means a totally different thing 😜
I have mine with double quantity of water and lemon. That's it. No sugar or honey or milk. I tried to add milk to my tea and didn't like it. So it's possible I would be in trouble with chai. BTW, tea is called ceai in Romanian 😉
Well, tea with milk can be worse and tasteless if it is not well prepared. With lemon, tea is always good and I also like sometimes ginger, and mint if I have to drink tea without milk. As I said, milk tea can be the worst.
I guess Chai, Ceai all kinda similar pronunciations. Well, one day I hope we will have a cup of tea and a cup of coffee together...
Thank you Erikah for taking the time to read the post and feedback. Now I know what you like and what to offer you when we will meet. :D 😀
We're going to have a tea with milk as I want to taste it and you'll be in charge of selecting me one 😎 as I have no clue. You can have coffee of course, I'm going to skip it as i gave up drinking coffee 5 years ago 😀
Definitely, it's a promise :D
