My Actifit Report Card: March 1 2025
Attending the community training on mushroom cultivation and value-addition course
Yesterday, I was travelling for the whole day (from 6.30 in the morning to 7.00 pm in the evening) to go to Yangon to attend the mushroom cultivation and value-addition course and could not post my daily activities for yesterday.
Today, I went to the training which was held at a Monastic education school. The course was free of charge and the participants just had to come to the place. I met people from different towns including one from Putao, which was located in Northernmost part of Myanmar. I was interested in the course because it included not only mushroom cultivation but also how to make value-added products from mushrooms and how the discarded mushroom bags were used for making compost; there I had a chance to observe how vermicompost and compost tea. They demonstrated that in the whole process of mushroom cultivation, nothing except plastic bags needed to be discarded.
In the morning, we were taught theory about the muschroom cultivation and at breaktime, we were treated with mushroom value-added products - mushroom crackers, mushroom salad and at lunch, with sour mushroom salad.
After break, we had a chance to observe some of the cultivation processess, which included substrate preparation using locally available produce, how incubation took place and harvesting.While oberving, we were explained about spawn production, inoculation processes and about the waste management.
And after lunch, every participant had a chance to do hand-on work on preparing grow bags, mushroom spawn bottles and steam them for sterilization.
After putting the grow bags and spawn bottles for sterilization and our group took a group photos; there were altogether three groups. There were around fifty participants, I think. It was fun learning and doing hand-on work. After understaning the processes, we can choose whether we will do the whole process or just some of it. And we can choose the mushroom species that we will grow; for me, I am interested in growing not only oyster mushroom but also shiitake because my town is located in cold region, where it is possible to grow shiitake. And for me, I could do the process better with machines (like mixing machine), and automation (like for controlling mushroom room temperature). I believed every participant would come up with their own ideas also.Having a try on something new is better than imagining it I think.
Those were some of the activities for today. It was fun and gave me new experiences
