Now onto the News, Rumors, and Commentary…
“They would produce enough runs at the plate that you could live with mediocre-to-bad figures in the Runs Prevented column, and when you added in the benefit of getting plus hitters at other positions, like DJ at second, or Giancarlo Stanton at DH, the value was self-evident. I’m actually more worried about Torres — catcher offense is static, shortstops are getting better at the plate all the time — but these two guys were supposed to be cornerstones of the lineup, even if they made us groan in the field. His framing has gotten better than it’s 2019 nadir — hey, maybe Tanner Swanson knows what he’s talking about — but it’s not a net positive. Gary Sánchez and Gleyber Torres drip potential, but over the past couple of seasons, it’s begun to look less and less like the Yankees can truly tap that potential.”
“I don’t know about you guys, but as the postseason rolls on, I might be a little disappointed that the Yankees aren’t involved. Later on, Dan will do a deep dive on the Yankees prospects heading to the Arizona Fall League, Andrés will discuss the Yankees’ pitching foundation for 2022, and John will make the case for a new hitting coach (but for different reasons than one might think). However, I don’t miss the stress that the 2021 Yankees would cause on an everyday basis, and even the single Wild Card Game they played amplified it. Today on the site, Josh will consider the Yankees’ trade-offs of losing good defense for offense at shortstop and catcher and Jon will recall the 25th anniversary of the infamous Jeffrey Maier Game.”
“NJ Advance Media | Mike Rosenstein: The Yankees need a new shortstop for the 2022 season after moving Gleyber Torres back to second base. NJ Advance Media | Brendan Kuty: The Yankees announced that left-handed starter Andrew Heaney has elected free agency in lieu of accepting an outright assignment to the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate. FanGraphs | Jay Jaffe: Now that the Yankees have been eliminated from the postseason, the question of where the team goes from here and how it can right itself hangs in the balance. After being relegated to mop-up duty in the bullpen, Heaney and the Yankees worked out a deal to option him late in the season.”
