"The trial of the century" starts today, Manchester City risks relegation and monster fines!
115 breaches of financial rules
The English Premier League has taken Manchester City and its owners, the City Football Group, to court. This for not respecting the financial fair play rules the UEFA and English Premier League have in place. An incredible amount of 115 breaches of those rules are on the table. The trial has started today on an undisclosed location, because of the massive amount of money and power at stake.
Manchester City and its Arabic owners have always stated that they have never broken any rules, but the EPL has a very different opinion about that. The list of accusations is impressive:
- Explicitly not declaring all income of the club in multiple years
- Explicitly not declaring part of manager and player wages and fees
- Artificially devaluing sponsor contracts
- Disobeying the rules of the Financial Fair Play imposed by the Uefa
...
A total of 115 accusations for which Manchester City says to have "massive evidence" that pleads them free.
Splinter bomb for European football
If Manchester City gets convicted for these charges the punishment will normally be very severe.
It can go from exclusion from European competitions like the Uefa Champions and Europa League, to relegation from the English Premier League or points deduction between 60 and 100 points which would definitely lead to relegation. Financially they could get fines into the hundreds of millions of Euros.
This would be a splinter bomb for the entire European football, because other clubs could follow, like Paris Saint-Germain, which has also had accusations of breaching the Financial Fair Play rules... But other clubs like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC and others could be next. This would make the entire European football shake in its foundations.
I hope justice can be served, because the way money is distributed in the top of European football is completely unfair. And maybe this is a way to make things kind of right again...
We shall see, but a verdict will have to wait to the beginning of 2025. So we will have to wait and see!
Sincerely,
