The most important cycling race is also the most amateurish one. Shame on UCI

Incredible race to watch

The road race for the elite men on the UCI world championships cycling in Glasgow was just a joy to watch. But there’s also a lot of eyebrows to be raised.

The podium of today’s race

First of all, the parcours of this year. The local circiut in Glasgow was quite ridiculous, 42 corners per round was just too many. It made the race so hard, that some of the shadow favourites like Alaphilippe, Asgreen, Matthews, etc… had to abandon the race with still 80 kilometres to ride. That’s just insane, these guys are not robots, but human.

Second, and more importantly, in the most important race of the year, no radio communication between the riders and the team coaches is allowed. And that’s just ridiculous. These riders are used to this, in every race inthe world, but not on the World Championships? Incomprehensible that is! And it changes the outcome of the race. At about 18 kilometres before the finish, Mathieu Van der Poel crashed in a corner. He lost about half a minute there. With radio communication, Pogacar, Van Aert and Pedersen would have been informed of that and would have closed the gap wit Van der Poel fastly. Now, they didn’t know and didn’t act on it. So you can definitely say, this influenced the result.

Van der Poel his crash and his victory!

The best guy won

Despite all of the above, we can say that the best cyclist won today. But the amateurish organisation overshadows that. And that is just sad, for the viewer and for the riders. I really hope UCI will enter the 21st century soon. It can only make the sport better for the riders and the viewers…

Sincerely,

Pele23

The way you are telling that there is a lot of strictness in it, it should not be done in this way because riding a bicycle for 18 km is not easy. Been working hard but I have come to the end. Congratulations to the person who is winning.

I agree with you that it was an incredible race on an insane circuit.
When Pogacar can't even stand on his feet after finishing tells a lot.

I don't agree with you on the radio contacts. I would live so see the radio contact disappear from other races too. Many races are directed from the cars and aiming on failures from others. The pee-incident in the Giro Donne is one of the examples of that.
I think the cycling sport would be much more interesting without the constant information about the gaps to the escapers and what they need to ride to capture them just before the finish line.

I follow you on the radio information. I would make instintive racing a lot more rewarding. But I do think, it is an all or nothing case. If there are radio's in the Tour de France, there should be radio's in the World Championships, and vice versa...
