Unfair disadvantage?

As of 1st of January 2025 advertising in football stadiums for gambling firms or casinos will not be allowed anymore. Only shirtsponsoring will still be allowed, but not on the front of the shirt of any sports club, football, basketball, cycling, etcetera

As of the 1st of January 2028, even shirts sponsoring will be forbidden for Belgian sports clubs.

If you look at the Jupiler Pro League, you see that almost every club has some sort of gambling sponsor. Which in some cases brings in 10 million EUR budget for those clubs per year. That will completely disappear.

That will give Belgian sports clubs an unfair disadvantage to clubs from neighbouring countries.
Where there is no ban!

What about European sports?

The reason for the ban are the 100000 Belgian gambling addicts. And the government thinks this ban will help…
But doesn’t take into account the hundreds of sports games on European level the people will see WITH gambling sponsors. From clubs in England, Spain, Germany, France, etc…

A stupid, naive move by the Belgian government that will only make the clubs poorer but won’t keep betting agencies and casinos from the TV screen!
