5 of Lionel Messi's sponsor deals are active in crypto!
5 out of 17
Lionel Messi, the 35 year old Argentinian wonderboy of football plays his second World Cup final on Sunday in Doha, Qatar. Most likely his last chance to become world champion. And besides the honour, it will bring him a lot more, his sponsorship deals could be worth 20 % more, if he takes home the title. And that is a big amount, because next to his yearly paycheck of 63 million EUR at Paris Saint-Germain, Leo rakes in a whopping 52 million EUR per year through sponsorship.
Sponsors like Lays, Macdonalds, Pepsi and Adidas are the usual suspects, but of his 17 deals, 5 of them are in the crypto world.
There is Sorare, the NFT sports card game, which has Lionel Messi as their flagship for promotion. But there is also a very shady deal with...
Socios.com
Through this platform people can buy "fan tokens", in this case of Argentina. With the ownership of these tokens, comes a form of participation in the organisation of the national team of Argentina. Owners of the token can vote for example, what music will be played in the stadium or when they score. And they can win memorabilia, like a match worn shirt of Lionel Messi, etc...
The price of this fan token is of course related to supply and demand, and let that be a hard one to swallow for most of the fans that bought their tokens a few months ago when it was launched with a big marketing campaign starring, Leo Messi.
Just before the World Cup in Qatar, the price of one token was around 9 $, right now, even though they have reached the final, it is at 4 $. Lots of fans have lost a ton of money, buying these tokens. It sounds and smells like a pump and dump scheme to me, in which the fans are the big losers...
Not only Lionel Messi and Argentina have partnered with Socios.com, lots of clubs launched it for their club, all with the same result, a huge price drop after a few months. Crypto and football, especially these kind of things, are not a good marriage.
20 % bonus
Nevertheless, Lionel Messi, won't become any poorer from it, to the contrary. With most of his sponsors he has a deal that when he wins the world cup, 20 % extra will be paid, because of the large visibility that comes with winning the world cup. So, it could be that on Sunday night, Lionel Messi takes a cheque of over 10 million Euros just in one day!
It must be great to be the GOAT!
