Algunos partidos se ganan (o se pierden) gracias a individuales puntuales que derivan en acciones peligrosas, que a su vez terminan en gol. Jugadas ajenas a la estrategia que ningún director técnico podría prever; provenientes de genialidades individuales, simple suerte, o una mezcla de ambas. Otras veces el enfoque es completamente diferente y el mérito de un triunfo se traslada allá a donde el jugador más importante, el que da indicaciones, manotea, anota en una libreta y grita constantemente aparece. Ese que demuestra la importancia que supone en el desarrollo de un equipo y, claro está, sus resultados. Hoy en el Estadio Mestalla se vivió un cotejo que define muy bien este último tipo. Diego Pablo Simeone sabía qué jugaría, interpretó y respondió casi a la perfección al rival, Valencia, al cual le sacó tres puntos de en su visita. Dicho de otra forma, el Atlético Madrid ganó desde la banca.

Los colchoneros retomaron la formación (5-3-2) de la primera fecha de La Liga; aunque de la línea de fondo en esa victoria (0-3) contra el Getafe solo se mantuvieron dos nombres: Axel Witsel y Saúl.
