Festivo era el ambiente en la tribuna del Estadio Cuauhtémoc, “La Franja” disputaba su cuarta llave de cuartos de final consecutiva -un hito que logra por primera vez en su historia- y lo hacía enfrentando al rival más mediático del futbol mexicano, unas Águilas del América que atraviesan un gran momento tras haber tocado fondo para después conseguir su clasificación directa a la liguilla de la mano de Fernando “el Tano” Ortiz. ¡Noche grande en territorio poblano!

El partido fue vibrante y entretenido, los locales arrancaron el juego con muy buenas sensaciones, parecían haber recuperado la memoria del buen futbol desplegado en la primera mitad del torneo, pero que fueron perdiendo con el paso de las jornadas en la fase regular del mismo; el América fue equilibrando las sensaciones y haciendo su futbol por momentos, aunque la primera mitad se volvió más ríspida de lo necesario y eso ensució el buen ritmo del arranque.

Fernando Ortiz se vio obligado a hacer un par de cambios en la primera mitad, tras las lesiones de Federico Viñas tras una entrada de Segovia dentro del área, el delantero uruguayo abandonó la cancha para dar entrada a Henrry Martín y 5 minutos antes del final del primer tiempo, Richard Sánchez tuvo que ser sustituido, aparentemente por una lesión muscular, Pedro Aquino tomo los mandos de la contención azulcrema.
Fernando Ortiz was forced to make a couple of changes in the first half, after Federico Viñas was injured following a challenge by Segovia in the box, the Uruguayan striker left the pitch to bring on Henrry Martín and 5 minutes before the end of the first half, Richard Sánchez had to be substituted, apparently due to a muscle injury, Pedro Aquino took over as Azulcrema's containment man.

A los 55’ minutos el conjunto poblano encontró la ventaja, un error de Henrry Martin regalando la pelota en la salida por la banda derecha abrió la puerta para que Segovia centrara a primer palo donde Aristeguieta remató ante Memo Ochoa que atajó el primer intento, pero nada pudo hacer en el segundo, “el Vikingo” marcaba para adelantar a los de Larcamón.
