The second day of the new year carried the sluggish weight of a sleep rhythm still wrecked by New Year’s Eve. I got up later than usual, stepping into a day that was cold, damp, and blustery, a trifecta of unpleasantness. The streets felt strangely subdued, as if they, too, hadn’t fully recovered. It seemed everything would only find its rhythm again by Monday, when winter vacationers returned to their routines. It wasn’t weather for photography, not by any stretch, but something caught my eye nevertheless. Across the river, the heating plant stood stark and exposed, its three smokestacks now fully visible. The massive, looming block of the flue gas cleaning system, once an imposing guardian of that view, is now completely gone. It was unsettling in its absence, like glancing at a skyline missing its tallest tower, a new openness I still haven‘t yet adjusted to.
