VAR-uined Weekend.
Football has changed over time but the inconsistency in rules stay the same. Back then it was referees who were always culpable for making some strange decisions that everyone frowns over and the league would always try to spin the rule just to accommodate what the referee has done. The VAR was introduced to help the referees but I think we are back to how things used to be.
A lot of people would say that it's the referee who still makes the final decision but still, the referee gets suggestions from those in the VAR, staring at 7 different screens and angles, showing what they wanted the referee to see and that's like influencing the decision to me. How can you have 7 angles to an incident and still make a terrible decision? I agree with those who said that maybe VAR should be limited to some life-threatening fouls, off-the-ball incidents and offsides because these are clean and obvious. Even with the offside, there is still a way they draw their lines to make us see what they want us to see. It's killing football more than it's helping.
This last weekend, most fans were fuming as well as the coaches after they cost their team points. It's crazy and insane how they still make bad calls despite the pieces of evidence presented to them. The foul on Christian Eriksen which led to Arsenal's goal that was ruled out, I would only say that Eriksen got bundled off the ball and shouldn't have been a foul because he was quickly closed down and challenged on the ball but seeing how the referee gave a foul for something similar on Martinelli earlier in the game, I can understand why the referee gave that foul and chalked out the goal just to stay consistent with his call during the game. It still doesn't mean the goal deserves to be ruled out, it only highlights how the rules are changing over time and it's ruining the game with soft calls for fouls.
I still can't understand how the lineman would flag for offside and the referee would blow immediately when he knows that he should allow the play to continue since it would be reviewed later and that was what chalked off Coutinho's goal against Manchester City. That goal would have won the game for Villa but it's another obvious call from the referee that ruined the game for Aston Villa.
I also cannot understand how the goal for West Ham got disallowed too when it was obvious that Mendy wouldn't have quickly gotten up to stop the ball. If that clip was watched closely, it would be seen that Mendy saw Cornet coming and he knew he wouldn't be able to react quickly and he made a mess out of the situation from a player that was about to trip over by rolling shamelessly on the pitch. They watched the screen many times and still couldn't see they were deceived by a goalkeeper that has been prone to mistakes this season.
Another decision that I cannot understand would be Newcastle's goal that was cancelled after the ball came off Crystal Palace's defender. Mitchell pushed Willock onto his goalkeeper; Guaita and the ball came off Mitchell into his own net while Willock clattered into with Guaita. How they viewed this on 7 different screens and still didn't see Mitchell was the one that pushed Willock into his own goalkeeper and still disallowed the goal is something that would remain a shock to me. What are these people viewing in the VAR room? Are they taking a nap or they are pushing a narrative of the things they want us to see because the way they justify their actions says a lot and it makes you wonder what they are seeing when everyone is clearly seeing their errors?
These are just tips of the iceberg of decisions that VAR has gotten wrong already this season and it calls for concerns if it's doing the job we all felt it should be doing. I know it has helped a lot too but when you see obvious decisions being watched on the screen getting overturned despite the clear and obvious footage, you can't help but wonder if VAR was set up just to twist decisions to favour certain teams for that time being.
Which of the games did you think the Referee and the VAR ruined over the weekend?
Thank you for your time.
My pen doesn't bleed, it speaks, with speed and ease.

The level of inconsistency is shocking. Those VAR dudes kill the joy in football by wasting our time and subduing our celebrations. Now, they've added shitty, error-strewn calls to it too. It's just frustrating.
It's really frustrating and it's no longer fun to watch. Delayed celebration, obvious errors they pass as correct decision and correct decisions mixed up as errors. I am tired already. Football shouldn't be this complicated.
Before VAR came we already got used to the fact that there will be mistakes from the officials. As a matter of fact, those mistakes led to other avenues for discussions and arguments which we enjoyed. When VAR was introduced, it was marketed as the technology that will cure all wrongs. I guess we expected too much of that technology, and we have every right to based on what the inventors and the football governing bodies said.
Yes, they made it sound like VAR would erase every error and minimize things at least. Right now, they are making things even worse.
Learnt Howard Webb is taking over England refereeing leadership in January. Fasten your belt, the ride is about to get bumpy. The wailing is about to get very loud.
😂😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣 Howard Webb... Good graciousness 🤣🤣😂🤣🤣.
Yeah, officer Webb.
Get ready, the bogeyman is coming! 😂😂😂
Bogeyman Webb with his corruption web 🤣🤣😂 spread across.
That's the boss you're calling. I love that dude so much. Whenever he's on the pitch, he is always in charge. Dem no born that player well to misbehave.
He's going to help EPL; he's one of the best ever.
Hahaha I like him too but he has a knack for being favourable to certain teams as good as he was...being in charge of VAR...behind the scene...he would still influence the same. It begs the question about what EPL is trying to achieve with him there...
Favourable to certain teams? Nah, that's not absolutely correct. It was just a narrative people created about Man U and Webb because Man U was the dominant team. Back then, every team profited from wrong officiating.
Some few years back, I actually did a comprehensive research about EPL teams that profited from wrong calls between year 2000 to 2012. Man U topped the chart maybe twice. Teams like Chelsea and Liverpool were more favoured, but those two were less spoken about compared to the camaraderie around Man U. It's a pity I was not in this platform back then. And, I only conducted the research based on the noise about Man U being favoured. Once I confirmed that it was all wrong perception, I discarded the data. How I wish I saved those now.
Wow. Thanks for saving my dear Manchester United with that and I wish I could lay hands on those records to shut people up too. It's true, they said he favoured us and yet they forgot that he was the one that gave Ronaldo a red card for handling the ball in the box and same with Scholesy.
Webb is the first manager to ever officiate the Champions League and World Cup finals on the same year, 2010. If he was that biased, UEFA and FIFA will never choose him for the roles. He is one of the best referee ever, the best England ever produced. I can tell you that because I grow up in a family of football referees, so I see things differently than a regular football fan.
Family of referees? Wow. That would definitely shape your views, no doubt. I respect that. You will be our Hive Gallagher 🤣🤣😂🤣 we will be asking for your views after controversial decisions henceforth... I will be tagging you anytime it happens 🤣😂😂
Okay, it's here 😂😂🤣... Did you see the controversial penalty they gave Real Sociedad yesterday against Manchester United?
It definitely shaped me a great deal. Hive Gallagher😂😂😂
I didn't watch the match. For some reasons, I was just scared of watching Ronaldo play Europa League.😂😂😂
But I read about the decision being controversial on SkySports. They are British media, and will definitely support the British team. I will go check it out now.
Just seen the highlight. Is that penalty taken by Bruno Fernandes Jnr.?😂😂😂
Honestly, the ball ricochet to Martinez's arm, it shouldn't have counted. But I always say players should do their part to make sure referees are not forced to errors. An experienced player should have his arms tucked by his side when defending the ball in the box.
The referee probably assumed the distance between Silva and Martinez is more than enough for the Argentine to take his arms out of the way, if he wanted to; the outstretched arm made him bigger than he should. His VAR will probably try to change his mind, but he is the one on the pitch with the live action and emotions, thus the final say.
Hahahaha that penalty was amazing. He took it so well. Ronaldo really struggled in that match and it's obvious he isn't the player he used to be. Age caught up with him badly hahahaha.
He actually folded his arm to his body. His thigh knocked the ball on to his arms which was even tucked away to his chest. It's a shocking decision I have to say but I'm not surprised with VAR and those behind the screen anymore and even the referees. Howard Webb should be fast 😂😂🤣😂 we need him to fix some of these messes.
I wailed endlessly on the Football Daily channel on Noise when Ronaldo was signed. He is not the guy we need to move forward. If he was still irreplaceable Madrid will never cut him loose, not to talk of Juventus. He gives one and takes two away from the team. He should've moved to City where his duty is to stay in the box and tuck in chances, not a place like Man U where he is expected to run around and press opposition defenders.
Immediately I saw that penalty I couldn't help but laugh at the decision. It was a ricochet, that's more than enough to justify that it's not supposed to be a foul. Decisions like that is the reason why the noise about referees making bad judgements because they never played the game still lingers.
Absolutely. As much as I love the Ronaldo package, I didn't want him to come. Going to City would have been nice even if the fans would shout and scream. He's not the person we need to grow the team. It was a panic fixing and it got us nowhere in the end.
Rightly so...that argument would always continue because they never played the game...I feel it's logical for them to at least understand it even without playing the game but oh well...
Well, Ronaldo's transfer got us somewhere; it ruined us the more. If Man U didn't sign Ronaldo, will they have ended the season in a worse position than the 6th they got? No, the worst would've been that 6th position. So, what's the point of acquiring a 36 year old dude, make him the highest paid player in the league and still get the worst possible result?
Cavani may not score as much as Ronaldo did last season, but he will give more to the team. At some point, the managers started Ronaldo alongside Cavani. They knew the team needed Cavani, but they couldn't drop Ronaldo due to the politics that comes with his acquisition.
The initial plan was for Cavani to play one last season at Man U before he returns to South America. That will give Man U a full season to search for, negotiate and acquire a top striker that fits the club's plan. Immediately Man U got Ronaldo, they binned the idea. Now, we are stuck with a 37 years old dude who doesn't fit the manager's philosophy and a very inconsistent Anthony Martial as the central strikers. Ronaldo got us somewhere; he strengthened our feet on the path of destruction.
😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣 strengthened our feet on the path to destruction hahaha. I agree... We would have been better without him because at least we would know we need a recognized striker. Martial is so inconsistent and I would have taken the efforts and experience of Cavani over him. Ronaldo became a bone in our neck...they should have terminated his contract while he looks for the team to play for on his own.
The guy only made our problems more glaring for the world to see. The dude just open our yansh anyhow. 😂😂😂
Terminate 'gini? Do you really think an American man will agree to terminate the contract of the most popular footballer in the world? Never. Americans love camaraderie, they love the attention. Ronaldo brings that in abundance; he brings a lot of money too - something those greedy, big headed Glazers wants in massive proportions.
Why do you think Todd Boehly wants to sign Ronaldo for Chelsea? Why do you think Paul Pogba saw out his contract? Boehly is an American, he wants what Americans want - a famous Ronaldo. He literally sacked Tuchel because he blocked Ronaldo's move and allegedly wanted to keep Ziyech and sell Pulisic, another hugely popular dude in America.
Pogba wasn't allowed to leave earlier because Man U thrives on social media. They could've cashed out on the dude after the 2018 World Cup. But, who will fill the marketing void his departure will create? No one comes close. That was why Man U swooped for Ronaldo when he became available. They will never terminate his contract. They are planning to activate the extra one year clause already. We are stuck with that dude.
Oh wow!!! I've never seen it in this light. I always appreciate your in-depth understanding and analysis.
Thank you, sir.🙌🙌🙌
🤗🤗🤗
The quality of refereeing in English football has been abysmal for years and nothing has been done about it. Instead it's as if referees are rewarded for the being awful.
I did not watch the City game, but I've watched the replay countless times and I wonder why VAR did not intervene.
Not to even talk about the shambles at Stamford Bridge. Absolute shocking referee decisions. Even the Coady goal against Liverpool is still suspect to me.
They always look for useless reasons to justify themselves. They said since the referee blew before he hit the shot, that's why they didn't intervene. I don't understand what they do behind the screen... It's shocking and annoying at the same time.
That's flimsy and inexcusable. Now they're accepting fault and claiming that they'll use the mistakes to educate their referees. Can you imagine.
VARis used in other leagues as well, but you barely see these controversies. It's only in England. It's quite disheartening especially to the teams
They will use it to educate their referees 🤣🤣😂😂. It is always in England...always. They are too political.
Swears. And they're killing the game
Absolutely.
I was annoyed with the decision that the referee made on the so-called flow on Mendy. Mendy was clearly acting there but the referee decided to ignore, VAR is becoming a mess and is already destroying football for we the fans.
VAR is a pain to us right now and it's taking the joy of football away. It was so obvious that Mendy was play acting and how they fell for it is shocking. They are the type that makes decisions based on intentions and body language and still they couldn't read Mendy's gaze to know he was acting after he started rolling because he knew he couldn't get to the ball.
Still waiting for the announcement of Mendy's Oscar nomination for Best Sports Cheat in Football after Fluffing a Save. Disgracefull performance from a supposed professional sportsman.
Well, there are always inconsistencies in certain things. The VAR is not left out. I think the introduction of it was just to be able to capture things the referee does not see.
But you know, one man's food is the poison for another. It came through for Man United. Although, it might still work against us someday. 🤣
Hahaha. It's grossly inconsistent and it annoys me so.
As someone who supports neither of the teams involved and from what I've read and seen since this travesty occurred, is that the referee, when asked to view his pitchside monitor, was NOT shown the crucial reverse angle of the shove in the back of the player causing him to clatter into the keeper that the rest of the world were able to view. Had he had the benefit of that view, and then the backbone to stand up to the VAR moron (I mean official) the goal may have ended up standing. This, to me, suggest a distinct bias towards teams by the VAR morons in not giving the man in the middle the full picture of the incident.

This explains it. This is so accurate and you nailed it on the head. It was a deliberate act to blindside the referee and make him take the hit based on their bias. They have 7 screens with 7 or more different angels to pick from yet they blindsided the referee like that. It's unfair.
Phew!
This football talks confuse me even further. I don’t know Jack about football. But, whatever you wrote is very correct. Great post😁.
