Stay safe my friend, I really do not like high winds!!!
Do you often lose electric power where you are from storms like this?

Yes, unfortunately we are still on the grid here which goes down with every ice storm and big winds but we have solar power back up. So we are ok.

Excellent, we are kind of like a Prius… We have grid power, then we have our solar, which is battery-based 6.3 kW plus a nice generator for those terrible ice storms!😇

I had a quote for 6 KW Grid Tied Solar Power system a few years ago and the price was around $30,000 ... That is when we decided Solar was too expensive. Now I just have a small 100 Watt Solar - Jackery back up Power for cooler/freezer, electronics and other 12 Volt DC appliances to get us through the Storm.

It all helps, my friend, even emergency back up solar!😊
I was fortunate to be an electrician in Colorado, so I installed my array myself😇

My @offgridlife dream ended when I saw how expensive the batteries were + the need for fuel generators to keep the batteries charged on cloudy days. Maybe some day when Bitcoin reaches 1 Million I can afford to go off the grid.

My neighbor just upgraded to lithium ion batteries, he told me they were over $10,000😳
I use 12 deep cycle golf cart batteries wired in three strings for 24 volts.
During Covid the US handed out cash to pump up the economy. I used this money to replace my batteries with new !😊😇

Do you have to run a generator on cloudy days to keep your batteries above 80 % charge ?

We are like a Prius car, we have both the ability to run our house on solar completely, and then we have grid power for back up, plus a propane generator for emergencies😊
During April I had one day where I needed to charge our batteries with grid power.
I can change as needed with an electric 24volt commercial battery charger that is on a “smart outlet” …..Alexa…..
So I can monitor my batteries from anywhere, and turn this charger on and off.
In an extreme situation I could run this charger from my propane generator if it came to that….

We trimmed the tops of our trees around the house after several large spruce, pine, maples, birch fell onto nearby homes in the last few storms. They don’t look great at 1st but you can actually prune a coniferous tree ( like a Christmas tree) to only grow to 15 ‘ … like a bonsai

That’s interesting, I never thought about calling them bonsai😊
That was a good call, we have lots of conifer trees, I love pine trees, and several broke off at the top during our last winter windstorm very dangerous!😬

Yes… the trick is to start trimming the top as soon as it reaches the height you want … 10-15’ is perfect … The Spruce will fill in at the bottoms and you end up with a very dense hedge … Pine is a little tricky since it likes to lose its lower branches … But keeping them at 11’ … they will never fall on your house.

Cedars would have been easier but we love pine and Balsam Fir.

I only paid $10 for each of these trees. … The Pine will grow 4’ per year unless you prune the new candles each June.

Sounds like you have a good plan, I need to prune some of my pine trees that will soon be blocking the bottom of my ground mount Solar array !😮
You are so correct, the new candles can grow two feet a year !😊
