A walk around Castle Hill, Huddersfield

(Edited)

The aptly named Castle Hill in Huddersfield, England, can be seen for miles around in all directions. It is by far Huddersfield's most conspicuous landmark. Victoria Tower is the current structure on top of it, built in 1897 as a memorial for Queen Victoria who had then been in power for 60 years, but other forts and castles have been erected here for as long as 4000 years ago.

Quite a contrast to yesterdays misty weather, today it was extremely clear; barely a cloud in the sky. It was cold, barely above 0 Celsius, but the wind was still.
We started our walk near the tower. The immediate landscape in all directions is comprised of wide open green fields, with plenty of trees dotted around, lines of which are often used to separate fields.

With winter setting in most of the trees have now lost their leaves, but some still hang on to their remaining few, giving off a nice orange hue.

Bex has a short rest with Isaac, with a lovely view of Castle Hill in the background.

Despite his elbow condition, Ted looks up at us like he wants to keep moving. We march onward.

With wide open spaces, great views, an always present castle hill, and a nice variety of trees, this walk is one of our local favourites.

It sure is! England is a very green place, probably due to all the rain! There are not many wild animals actually because all the land has been stripped of it's vegetation to create nice wide open green fields which are occupied by farm animals, mostly sheep. This is due to an ancient (400 year old) law where the government pays land owners to keep their land in an arable condition. They do not even need to grow anything on it. It just has to be ready to be grown upon. This is why we have sheep everywhere, to keep the grass short and the land in an arable condition. For wild animals to return we would need to allow the vegetation to grow back, allowing the natural ecosystems to reoccupy the space. This process is called rewilding and I hope it happens during my lifetime!

Thank you for telling me!
I'm interested in the england, but I didn't get any knowledge about the animals that are unique to the england.
Yeah, I'm sure the england has so many ranches.
I hope they will coexist with wild animals in the future!😊

Yes it's very nice around where I live once you get up on the hills. Where I grew up it was very flat. When I moved here I loved the hills / views so much that I have stayed here for 10 years now.
