Is my garmin watch smarter than me?: January 20 2025
I was pretty achy and sore after doing a bit of a harder zone 4 parkrun yesterday. I had an easy zone 2, 30, or 40 minutes planned for today. I started running after a 20 minute warm up on my bike indoors set up on the trainer. I just set my watch to show time done/ heart rate and just head out on some out and back course. I am getting better at this easy zone 2 running and do not check my watch as much anymore. Usually, I can just feel the effort and adjust automatically up and down hills.
Anyways, a few minutes into it and a quick glance at my watch showed my garmin display was at 170 heartbeats per minute! That is way too high for my easy run. I try to slow down even though I feel fine other than the achiness.
I gave it a good 5 minutes, going as slow as I could, but the only way to lower my heart rate was to walk. I tried to get a manual reading on my neck or wrist to confirm, but it felt too awkward on the move and not that important.
I walked for a bit and bumped into a few other friends out running. I was tempted to forget about my plan and just run with them. I did for a while hoping my heart rate would settle back to normal, but it did not, so I just let them go and ran/walked for a bit to finish my workout.
Previously, I have alway over done things, so maybe my garmin is helping to hold me back and make sure I recover more. I just thought I would feel more uncomfortable than just achy legs to get my heart rate that high.
Maybe the heart rate monitor just is not reading right today, but it has seemed to be close enough to spot on for the past few months.
I will find out on tomorrow's run. So, it's not the best run this morning, but at least the sunrise was good.
