Before I start giving my opinion, I would first like to mention that I am not a big fan of "Spokon" (Sports) either as a genre or as a means of entertainment in general. In my life I may have seen one or two movies and/or series related to a popular sport, such as soccer or basketball, but not much else. As for anime, I've only seen Captain Tsubasa, but only its 2018 Remake, not the original series. So with this present you can have an idea of how little I know about this genre within this industry. However, seeing that Blue Box is not only presented as a sports anime, but also possesses a plot related to teenage school romance, it was more than enough to start watching it on air since last year. Now that it is nearing its end, I can already give you a personal opinion regarding this show. As a fan that I am of romantic comedies, I must mention that this series can be considered as a very typical and repeated story of the classic teenage romance without much advancement, but with many clichés in between. So, if you wanted to see something more original, then maybe the mix of sports with romance and comedy might interest you.

Antes de empezar a dar mi opinión, quiero mencionar primero que no soy muy fanático del “Spokon” (Deporte) ni como género ni como medio de entretenimiento en general. En mi vida habré visto una que otra película y/o serie relacionada a algún deporte popular, como el fútbol o el básquet, pero poco más. En cuanto a animes, solo he visto Captain Tsubasa, pero únicamente su Remake del 2018, no la serie original. Así que con esto presente pueden tener una idea de lo poco que sé de este género dentro de esta industria. Sin embargo, al ver que Blue Box no solo se presenta como un anime de deportes, sino que también posee una trama relacionada al romance escolar adolescente, fue más que suficiente para empezar a verla en emisión desde el año pasado. Ahora que está cerca de su final, puedo darles ya una opinión personal con respecto a esta obra. Como fanático que soy de las comedias románticas, debo mencionar que esta serie se puede considerar como una historia muy típica y repetida del clásico romance entre adolescentes sin mucho avance, pero con muchos clichés de entre medio. Así que, si querías ver algo más original, pues puede que la mezcla de deportes con romance y comedia que tiene te pueda interesar.

Starting with the story they try to tell us in this anime, everything seems to revolve around the sports and personal life of our protagonist Taiki Inomata, who is madly in love with Chinatsu Kano. Being both from different sports areas, they share the same passion for hard work and teamwork. Of course, more on Chinatsu's side is teamwork as she is a member of the women's basketball team. However, on Taiki's side it is more of an individual work that, due to the training and example given to him by his teammates and superiors, we will see him improve little by little in his area as a member of the school's men's badminton team. But, there is a detail that surely many of us who have watched this anime missed at the beginning: Taiki decides to reach the same level that Chinatsu does in order to qualify for the nationals. This goal he sets for himself from the beginning pushes him to the limit every time, as he has no gift or talent in what he does, unlike Chinatsu who is very talented and even famous for it. While the main plot twist we see of Chinatsu moving in and living in the same house with Taiki and his family is something that moves them forward in terms of treatment, their relationship is one of those details that takes a long time to develop as it is.

You probably already realized what I was referring to above with this anime having a very "repetitive" romantic story, at least for me. With the only difference of being a mix of Spokon with RomCom, it is normal that we see episodes and many moments where we will see our protagonist and other characters unravel, train, play and try to achieve their objectives and goals in each of their areas. But in terms of relationships we can see many similarities with other romance anime that only focus on an unrequited relationship at the beginning and then becomes a kind of competition of which girl will stay with the protagonist to finally end in nothing, beyond something open to interpretations (but that surely can be translated to nothing in the end). And this is exactly what we will see in this anime, well, except for the ending, which hopefully will not be like that. Personally I think it's a bit stressful to see the protagonist in love with a girl who proves not to be interested in romance, but who in turn does things and treats him like she's hinting at something and will leave him with more doubts than answers, all this while we see how another girl arrives and proposes to him, making this secondary character the one who has advanced the most among the rest of the cast we know, so far.

Empezando por la historia que nos intentan contar en este anime, todo parece girar en torno a la vida deportiva y personal de nuestro protagonista Taiki Inomata, quien está perdidamente enamorada de Chinatsu Kano. Al ser ambos de diferentes áreas deportivas, comparten una misma pasión por el trabajo duro y en equipo. Claro, más por el lado de Chinatsu es el trabajo en equipo por ser miembro del equipo de básquet femenino. Sin embargo, por el lado de Taiki es más un trabajo individual que, debido al entrenamiento y el ejemplo que le dan sus compañeros y superiores, lo veremos mejorar poco a poco en su área como miembro del equipo de bádminton masculino de la escuela. Pero, hay un detalle que seguramente a muchos los que hemos visto este anime lo pasaron por alto al principio: Taiki decide alcanzar superarse a tal nivel que lo hace Chinatsu para lograr calificar para las nacionales. Esta meta que se coloca desde el principio lo lleva al límite siempre, ya que no posee ningún don ni talento en lo que hace, a diferencia de Chinatsu que es muy talentosa e incluso es famosa por eso. Si bien el giro de trama principal que vemos de Chinatsu mudarse y vivir en la misma casa con Taiki y su familia es algo que los lleva a avanzar en cuanto a trato, su relación es de esos detalles que se toman mucho tiempo para desarrollarse como es.

Seguramente ya se dieron cuenta a lo que me refería arriba con que este anime tiene una historia romántica muy “repetitiva”, al menos para mí. Con la única diferencia de ser una mezcla de Spokon con RomCom, es normal que veamos episodios y muchos momentos en donde veremos a nuestro protagonista y otros personajes desenvolverse, entrenar, jugar y tratar de conseguir sus objetivos y metas en cada una de sus áreas. Pero en cuanto a relaciones podemos ver muchas similitudes con otros animes de romance que solo se centran en una relación no correspondida al principio y que luego pasa a ser una especie de competencia de con cuál chica se quedará con el protagonista para terminar al fin en nada, más allá que algo abierto a interpretaciones (pero que seguramente se puede traducir a nada al final). Y es exactamente esto lo que veremos en este anime, bueno, quitando lo del final que esperemos que no sea también así. Personalmente pienso que es un tanto estresante ver al protagonista enamorado con una chica que demuestra no estar interesada en el romance, pero que a su vez hace cosas y lo trata como si insinuara algo y lo dejará con más dudas que con respuestas, todo esto mientras vemos cómo otra chica llega y se le declara, haciendo de este personaje secundario la que más ha avanzado de entre el resto del elenco que conocemos, hasta el momento.

On this side, something I can mention that I like about this anime is the way it develops each of its characters individually. Starting with the protagonist, we see a small variety of examples of hard work, effort, good use of talent, dedication, self-improvement, motivation, inspiration, etc..

Regarding the humor, if we call this anime a "romantic comedy" I think it's exaggerating a bit, at least for me. Since it doesn't have such a flashy, double entendre or heavy type of humor as most common RomComs do nowadays, it's strange to see it being categorized with this type of genre. But as much as it surprises us, yes, it does have comedy, at least humor that doesn't go beyond being pleasant and comfortable for any viewer. It has its funny moments, yes, but not much of this is found, unlike the previous details that I have already mentioned that abound in this anime. Being an anime where sports and romance predominate, in that order, it is evident that we see more emotional and inspirational moments than romantic and humorous ones. Which I understand why many have found the series a bit boring because of its slow way of introducing the characters and developing them in the first half of the series. It can be said that the "interesting" comes after the second half, although that depends on the viewer. Also that with the absence of fanservice that many are attracted to, it is reason enough for it to be an anime passed into oblivion shortly after starting to be broadcasted. For me, it's an anime that I enjoy watching and can relax and be entertained by, regardless of how slow or boring it is for most.

Clichés como los triángulos amorosos, la que se declara y que al final queda de lado, la que rechaza al protagonista estando enamorado de ella y luego se le acerca aceptando su compañía quedando el protagonista confundido de lo que siente en realidad, las indirectas tan evidentes que recibe, los momentos incómodos que siempre ocurren, los malentendidos, etc. Lo único que lo hace diferente de la mayoría de animes RomCom es tanto su impresionante calidad audiovisual como también su mezcla con el género del deportes. Por este lado, algo que sí puedo mencionar que me gusta de este anime es la forma de desarrollar de manera individual a cada uno de sus personajes. Empezando por el protagonista, vemos una pequeña variedad de ejemplos de trabajo duro, esfuerzo, buen uso del talento, dedicación, autosuperación, motivación, inspiración, etc.

Con respecto al humor, si llamamos a este anime una “comedia romántica” creo que es exagerar un poco, al menos para mí. Como no tiene un tipo de humor tan llamativo, de doble sentido o pesado como lo tienen la mayoría de RomComs comunes en la actualidad, es extraño ver que se catalogue con este tipo de género. Pero por mucho que nos sorprenda, sí, tiene comedia, al menos un humor que no pasa de ser agradable y cómodo para cualquier espectador. Tiene sus momentos graciosos, eso sí, pero no es mucho lo que se encuentra de esto, a diferencia de los anteriores detalles que ya he mencionado que sí abunda en este anime. Al ser un anime donde predomina el deporte y el romance, tal cual en este orden, es evidente que veamos más momentos emotivos e inspiradores que románticos y humorísticos. Lo cual entiendo que a muchos les haya parecido una serie un tanto aburrida por su forma tan lenta de introducirnos a los personajes y desarrollarlos en su primera mitad. Se puede decir que lo “interesante” llega después de la segunda mitad, aunque eso depende del espectador. También que con la ausencia del fanservice que a muchos les atrae, sea razón suficiente para que sea un anime pasado al olvido poco después de empezar a emitirse. Para mí, es un anime que me gusta ver y con el que puedo relajarme y entretenerme, indiferentemente de lo lento o aburrido que sea para la mayoría.

With a great production company and a well-known studio house in charge, it is evident to notice a quality of animation that can easily be positioned above many current generic anime and can even be considered one of the best anime in the sports and romance genre nowadays. With a particular animation style and very faithful to the original work, I really like the character designs, as well as the drawing style and the fluidity it has in terms of animation, depth, shadows, lights and visual effects with very well done transitions. With an excellent animation work like the one we can see in this anime, it is easy to get attached and enjoy scenes with badminton and/or basketball games without the need of being a fan of these sports. I also have to mention the sound effects work that, wow, is excellent and even more so with the effects and sounds they make when they play, run or practice. The soundtrack is another very important detail to mention, especially because of how well done it is and that it generates emotion in those key moments. But most of all for the Openings and Endings that the series has, which are an audiovisual marvel. Anyway, as I mentioned at the beginning, this is an anime to recommend if you are a fan of romance or sports.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the romance and sports genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del lado técnico de este anime. Con una gran productora y una conocida casa de estudio a cargo, es evidente notar una calidad de animación que se puede posicionar fácilmente por encima de muchos animes genéricos actuales e incluso se puede considerar uno de los mejores animados del género del deporte y el romance en la actualidad. Con un estilo de animación particular y muy fiel a la obra original, me gustan mucho los diseños de los personajes, al igual que el estilo de dibujo y la fluidez que tiene en cuanto a animación, profundidad, sombras, luces y efectos visuales con transiciones muy bien hechas. Con un excelente trabajo de animación como el que podemos ver en este anime, es fácil llegar a encariñarse y disfrutar de escenas con partidos de bádminton y/o básquet sin necesidad de que seas fan de estos deportes. También tengo que mencionar el trabajo de efectos de sonido que, vaya, está excelente y más aún con los efectos y sonidos que hacen cuando juegan, corren o practican. La banda sonora es otro detalle muy importante a mencionar, sobre todo por lo bien hecho que está y que cumple con generar emoción en esos momentos clave. Pero más sobre todo por los Openings y Endings que tiene la serie que son una maravilla audiovisual. En fin, como ya mencioné al principio, este es un anime que sirve para recomendar si eres fan del romance o de los deportes.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del romance y el deporte.
