My most important medal [ENG|ESP]

For more than 10 years I have been practicing a sport that has become part of me, I need to do it to feel good. It all started because of my constant respiratory problems, one of the specialists who treated me suggested me to practice swimming so that my lungs would start to work better, he told me that this is the most complete sport that exists.

That day I started my journey in search of an improvement for my health without imagining that I would find my passion and my happiness. After asking in several places I arrived at one where besides teaching swimming they also participated in competitions at world level, my intention was to practice swimming to improve my health, but imagining myself in a competition seemed to me also pleasant.

At first I started attending 3 days a week, but I started to feel so good that the only day I didn't go was Sundays. I really liked swimming and that made me quickly learn the different swimming styles on which the competitions were based. My favorite is the freestyle, in a few months I was getting better and better and I reached up to 400 meters in just one year. This made one of the instructors tell me - Rachel you are very good at freestyle and I would like you to represent us in the next national competition-. I quickly agreed and was very excited.

I attended that competition and I knew what sportsmanship and competition meant, I felt the adrenaline and even though I didn't win that day, I felt like a winner. After that competition there were many others, many of them I won and in others I lost, but I believe I will never lose the love I feel when swimming, besides having improved my health I feel happy when I am underwater, the noise of the world, the excess of problems do not reach me, I do not hear them there.

It was in an Olympic competition recently that I had the biggest challenge of my life, we were only 3 competitors left after several rounds of the competition. The referee had to blow a whistle 3 times and that indicated the exact moment we had to start swimming. When the first whistle was blown, one of the players jumped into the water and the competition started, when the other competitor noticed that the competition was not stopped, he jumped into the water as well. In swimming, when you start before the referee indicates it, the person who committed this offense is immediately disqualified for lack of sportsmanship or, as others say, unsportsmanlike conduct.

I slowly saw how the other two competitors were moving away, but I did not move from there until I heard the third sound, I knew I was not going to win, but I was calm because I did the right thing. Like every time I felt the pleasure of submerging and enjoying the water. Almost at the end of the 400 meters I managed to pass the competitor who came second and I thought - I will not win, but at least I will be in second place-. And so it was, I finished the competition in second place.

When we finished, it was time for us to take our position as winners, out of 80 competitors there were only three of us left. Through the microphone the referee said: - for lack of sportsmanship the competitors who are in first place and third place are disqualified, there is only one winner who must move immediately to first place, Rachel Smith you can take your place-. I could not believe it, I did not advance after them in the competition because my conscience told me it was wrong, at that moment I was happy and I felt proud of the sportsmanship I had learned.

After the other two competitors retired they gave me my first place trophy, I was the best in the world but that trophy did not mean as much as the medal they gave me later while they said -this medal wear it with pride, you have earned it for your sportsmanship-. I have that medal hanging on my wall and it is the first thing you see when you enter my house, it reminds me that the important thing is not to win at all costs, it is to be true to your principles.

A beautiful story that you share with us on this day. The sportsmanship made the girl win the first prize, many times it is not enough to just be the best, but to have principles and values.

Thanks for sharing your story.
Good day.

You deserved the medal indeed. Lots of people break the rules, because of lack of an understanding of sportmanship. I love swimming a lot, it's a very fun sport. When under the water, I feel that liberation from all stress and pressures of life. Thanks for sharing this creative story.

What an important lesson you highlighted. Oftentimes we are engaged in activities and the search for success and we forget principles, which is very wrong.
Thanks for sharing.
