I want to take up chess again and I have figured out how I can do it since the biggest problem I have had with this game is that not everyone knows or likes to play and that is why I have always lacked opponents.

But hang in there... the first thing I have to say is that I am not a chess player. And I haven't played for a long, long time. I just learned a little bit about how to move the pieces when I was in elementary school and continued to play sporadically when I had someone to play with.

Sometimes I started to practice alone, to spend some game among great masters, of those that came in newspapers or magazines; but I always ended up getting bored. You learn a lot this way, it is clear, analyzing the moves of the main exponents of the sport of science.

As I write, so many memories come to my mind... my chess teacher, for example, from Candelaria, the small town where I lived for part of my adolescence.

I had just moved there with my parents and my sister @anixaeva, who at that time was a gymnast (I hope she will tell me one day about that beautiful stage of her life). I started 5th grade and the teacher was the one who taught me how to play or the little I know. I even went to provincial competitions in Pinar del Rio, and in one of them, my sister also participated in her sport. She won and was a star in that competition, not me. I was defeated in the first rounds.

I remember him as a slow man, with skin as black as ebony. I don't think he was young, or maybe because he had a moustache and beard he looked older; but when he laughed, his eyes would get small and his whitish teeth would stand out in a face... I can say that it was boyish. He was also tall, though a little stooped in his gait.

He lived in a very modest little house, so modest I think he didn't have the necessary conditions, but he managed, or at least that's what I think.

He was lonely and shy, I guess. The truth is that I don't know much more than what I could observe and the echoes that now come to my memory, because we were only 4 or 5 boys that were limited to going to his damaged little house, and sitting and playing in the doorway, with two tables and four or five chairs that he arranged for that.

I had to write by WhatsApp to my neighboring Anilén, and playmate then, to remind me of the name of the teacher. She has been living in Bilbao for years and owns a deli there. She says she still plays chess, but not much. We haven't seen each other for a long time. I also asked her if she remembered the name of one of the children we played with; he was very good, besides he always beat us, he was the only one who could play one on one with the teacher. Anilén remembered Lázaro, the teacher's name, but not the boy's name.

I have always had my chess set, although I didn't use it much. However, a few years ago I lost it when it stayed at an ex's house and I could not recover it; but talking to a colleague who played in a journalist's lid, I told her that I knew how to move the pieces and that maybe one day I would come over there to play a game. A few days later she surprised me with a gift: a brand new game, with a cloth board.

Well, let's go back to the beginning. From the video that accompanies this post, you should already imagine how I plan to return to chess. Step by step, a little bit of (hahaha) practice, and daring to play a game or two online.

I have been working as a photojournalist in some international tournaments here in Cuba and I have in my archive images of Vasil Mikhailovich Ivanchuk, the Ukrainian Grandmaster.

Years ago I also did a photo session with Leinier Domínguez for the Bohemia magazine. And so I have also had this other contact with this exciting world of chess.

These two fought hard in 2007 in the 42nd Capablanca Memorial, in which Ivanchuk came first with 7.5 points and Dominguez with 5.5 points.

The point is that Leinier had been crowned in 2004 and the Ukrainian seems to have decided to make his supremacy clear the following three years.

This is curious because in 2008 and 2009 the Cuban regained the podium, which left Ivanchuk unsettled and unbeatable again for three more consecutive years. Well, in 2011 he had to share the first place with a Vietnamese.

So I owe you these pictures which will of course come with some memories. But I'd better say goodbye now. I have a lot of practice to do here.

Quiero retomar el ajedrez y he descubierto cómo puedo hacerlo, ya que el mayor problema que he tenido con este juego es que no todos saben o les gusta jugar y por eso siempre me han faltado contrincantes.

Pero aguanta un poco ahí… lo primero que tengo que decir es que no soy una ajedrecista. Y hace mucho, muchísimo tiempo que no juego. Simplemente aprendí un poco a mover las piezas cuando estaba en la escuela primaria y seguí jugando esporádicamente cuando tenía con quien.

A veces me ponía a practicar sola, a pasar alguna partida entre grandes maestros, de esas que venían en periódicos o revistas; pero terminaba siempre aburriéndome. Se aprende mucho así, está claro, analizando los movimientos de los principales exponentes del deporte ciencia.

Mientras escribo van llegando a mi mente tantos recuerdos… mi profesor de ajedrez, por ejemplo, de Candelaria, el pueblito donde viví parte de mi adolescencia.

Recién me había mudado para allí con mis padres y mi hermana @anixaeva, que en aquella época era gimnasta (ojalá ella cuente un día esa etapa de su vida tan bonita). Llegué iniciado el 5to grado y el profe fue quien me enseñó a jugar, o lo poquito que sé. Hasta fui a competencias provinciales en Pinar del Río, y en una de ellas coincidió que mi hermana también participaba en su deporte. Ella ganó y fue estrella en esa competición, yo no. A mí me derrotaron en las primeras rondas.

Lo recuerdo como un hombre pausado, de piel negra como ébano. Creo que no era joven, o quizás porque tenía bigote y barba lucía más viejo; pero cuando reía, los ojos se le ponían chiquiticos y sus dientes blanquísimos resaltaban en un rostro… puedo decir que aniñado. También era alto de estatura, aunque un poco encorvado en su andar.

Vivía en una casita muy modesta, de tan modesta creo que no tenía las condiciones necesarias, pero él se las arreglaba o al menos eso creo yo.

Era solitario y tímido, supongo. La verdad no sé mucho más que lo que podía observar y los ecos que llegan ahora a mi memoria, pues solo nos limitábamos 4 o 5 muchachos a ir a su casita que estaba de medio lado, y sentarnos a jugar en el portal, con dos mesas y cuatro o cinco sillas que él acomodaba para eso.

Tuve que escribirle por WhatsApp a mi coterránea Anilén, y compañera de juegos entonces, para que me recordara el nombre del profesor. Ella lleva años viviendo en Bilbao y es dueña allá de una charcutería. Dice que todavía juega ajedrez, pero poco. Y es que nosotras hace mucho tiempo que no nos vemos. También le pregunté si recordaba el nombre de uno de los niños con quien jugábamos; era buenísimo, además de que siempre nos ganaba, él era el único que podía jugar de tú a tú con el profesor. Anilén se acordó de Lázaro, el nombre del profe, pero el del niño no.

Siempre he tenido mi juego de ajedrez, aunque no lo use mucho. Sin embargo, hace unos años lo perdí, al quedarse en casa de una ex y no lo pude recuperar; pero hablando con una colega que jugaba en una lid de periodistas, le comenté que sabía mover las piezas y que quizás un día me llegaba por allá a jugar alguna partida. A los pocos días me sorprendió con un regalo: un juego nuevecito, con tablero de tela.

Lo que pasa es que este juego tiene dos reyes negros. Cero reina.

Bien, volvamos al principio. Por el video que acompaña este post ya debes imaginar cómo pienso regresar al ajedrez. Pasito a pasito, un poco de (jajaja) bastante práctica, y atreviéndome a jugar alguna que otra partida online.

He estado trabajando como fotorreportera en algunos torneos internacionales aquí en Cuba y tengo en mi archivo imágenes de Vasil Mijáilovich Ivanchuk, el Gran Maestro ucraniano.

Hace años también le hice una sesión de fotos a Leinier Domínguez para la revista Bohemia. Y así he tenido también este otro contacto con ese mundo tan apasionante del ajedrez.
