Cycling: Oh, fuck...

Heeeyho Readers! Sometimes things go wrong!

The title describes my reaction. Not particularly the one to swear, but sometimes it's the only vocabulary available. Yeah... just as I'm saving up to buy more parts for the monstercross project, the handlebar manages to break. At least the fault was entirely mine and the handlebar proved perfect during this time — my teeth are thankful, because broken handlebars tend to be nasty.

well...

How the hell did that happen?

Apparently, our brain shuts off sometimes when we are clipped to the pedals. Have you? Took a 180° turn on sand, front wheel washed off, and I forgot to unclip {kiss the ground mathafacka}. The classic 0 km/h crash. The handlebar leveraged against the ground and broke right at the joint.

Shit happens, I guess

Let's save up for a new one while riding the flat bar again.

20240325_110025.jpg

Today I trained using the flatbar after a long while and gotta say the bicycle felt... strange. The aero position of a drop bar is a lot better for windy days. Or maybe I was tired.

On the positive side I'll be able to train jumps again, because the previous handle bar never gave me enough confidence. My flatbar is 760mm wide, so compare that to the 470 of the drop bar; the narrower, the quicker to turn.

The major factor to change from flat bar to dropbar was to change my riding position. When you are riding nearly everyday the body gets used to the position, which might trigger pain. I was having severe traps/neck pain that was completely cured as soon as using the dropbar. Let's see if the pain is gonna come back. If it does I'll have to change something on the fit.

For the Strava geeks

I managed to finish the ride despite having a broken handlebar. Here it is.

Let's keep on pushing!!!!

Peace.

The standing still, forgot to unclip falls are terrible 😂
I only had a few, but as you go down, you know you're in trouble.
But did the handlebar break only when you fell over? Was it made of carbon?
I hope it wasn't that expensive...

It's that kind of mini heart attack fall hahaahaha

I think the very tip of the handlebar leveraged against the frame and twisted, which applied quite some force right at the solder causing a crack (aluminium). It's gonna cost around 50 USD, so it's not even worth it to try and repair.

It's always interesting how we get used to certain bars and their associated locations for hands, body weight, and even saddle adjustment. Is it possible to get the old one welded?

Heey Cap., glad to hear from you. Is everything alright? And Jerry?

It's also interesting how tiny adjustments make a huge difference, especially on saddle height or fore/aft position. Biggest difference I felt is to ride against the wind though, that aero position is so great.

Is it possible to get the old one welded?

I'll see if the cost is worth it, since the cornerbar is about 50 bucks on aliexpress.

Doing ok right now. Ready for winter to end and spring to make it with warmer weather. Insee what you mean it might be just as affordable to replace it

Yup. They also have a carbon fiber version of the cornerbar. The original one made by Surly is cromoly (I think), but it's double the price.

Those sneaky clip pedals... I have always feared them and thus never gave them a try. Feels so unnatural to cycle normies like me. But of course, I know people who say it´s the best invention ever :D

Once you get used to them, there's no coming back xDD
We do get used to uncliping real fast when needed, but that day my brain kinda of shut off hahahaha
