My Cycling World In A Bit

Cycling for me started as fun. It was something I had seen other kids around our community do and I envied them from a distance. During those days, only a few kids had the opportunity to own a bike. I was not opportune to be among the few. We would queue to take a short ride on our neighbor's son's bike. Seriously, it was an enjoyable short ride but I wanted more.

It all began with some folks, palm wine tappers, who carry the natural drink on their bikes. Their bikes served as mobile kiosks for selling palm wine to people who needed it. One such bike was the Ralley, a tiny metal, leather-seat bicycle. They were so prominent among villagers that whoever owned one was seen as a wealthy man.

My urge to ride a bicycle always increased over the years. Since I had no resources to own a bike of my own, I just stayed back and watched cycling on television.

One good year, I got a bicycle as a gift from a distant cousin. I loved the bicycle so much that I rode it everywhere. One hot afternoon, I was riding and returning from school but was hit by a motorbike. It was not a fatal accident but I passed out for about two hours. Since then, I haven't been going close to bicycles anymore until recently.
When I was still nursing the injury I sustained during the crash, I dreamed of riding. Sometimes, when my mother had gone to her office, I would sneak into the basement of our house take out my BMX bicycle, and ride till I was filled.

Cycling was like food to me then. Until the urge to ride quenches, I would be imbalanced. Another thing that made me steer clear was the injury caused by the bicycle seat. I craved more rides but I was having pains while sitting to ride. So, I had to lay low for a while. A close friend of mine told me to keep cycling, that the pain is what an amateur like me would experience. I guess that I was too timid to continue.

Why I Got On The Bike Again

I had dreaded bicycles for over ten years. It was unusual for me to get close to it. It was noticed that I had started to add weight. There was the need to burn down some calories and my first option was to get into cycling.
My first trial worked out pretty well. Then, it became something I do on the weekends. Within a short time, I started to normalize my weight.

Students in my school got into the habit of riding. We would ride through the school premises, especially during sports. This brought many other learners to the group. We would time ourselves to ride around the school sports complex.

Currently, I am seen as the ambassador of cycling in my school. The learners want to have a cycling club. I think it is going to be very interesting, having all the kids kit up in their cycling wear.

It is a known fact that cycling keeps you fit, mentally and physically. For people like me who have the tendency of growing belly fats, we can burn it down through cycling. That's a therapy that we all should consider.

Again, as we grow older,we need to know that old age is a blessing and not a curse as seen in some climes. Hence, we should build our legs for the challenges of old age. Cycling can help five your legs the stamina it needs to carry your body when we eventually become old.

The best time to cycle is when the weather is calm and friendly. It is during that period that one can enjoy the ride. Here in Africa, we enjoy cycling in the morning when the eastern wind is blowing and the atmosphere isn't harsh.

I am back in the cycling ways and I hope it stays for long.

It's is the best to have a cycling club if the students called for it. It's even better you are their Coach.
I love this aspect of it

I'm looking into that. To have a cycling club will help the learners have access to riding and learning new cycling skills.

The first thing I thought when I opened this post is how on earth is that lovely smiling lady on the first photo going to ride that bicycle in that long dress 😀

And the second thing I wonder is do all these people share that same bike or do they all have the same type?

It would be a nice initiative to start a cycling club indeed.
Thanks for your submission!

All the girls in the images used here are all riders but they all had to pose with my bike because of this post. In subsequent posts, you'd see all of them cruising their bikes.

Thanks for having me here.

Well, it's never too late to start, the important thing is that you started doing it and well, your anecdotes are interesting to read, and it catches my attention how all those young women ride a bicycle, here in my country it is not so common to see a young man on a bicycle. It is mostly used by adults to commute to work.

Thank you so much. The world is changing and we have to change along too. In the coming weeks, we would be exploring our cycling in a club meeting.

Haha, I thought I was the only one that sneaks and gets on my father's bike to ride when he is not around. That was great then, yup, cycling can really serve as an easy method of delivery. I used to cycle to school when I was in basic school, and I did really enjoyed those moments the most

You sneaked too?
That's the fun of our boyhood.
I think cycling is just one thing that most boys experience.
