What it takes to be a martial artist
It takes a lot to be a martial artist. People learn martial arts for a whole lot of things, but the fact is that it takes a lot to be one. You can learn martial arts for sports, and you can also learn to stop being bullied by people. I can remember when I was in secondary school, I was once bullied by a very huge guy. It happens when I'm being slapped in front of girls, and there's nothing I can do about it.
I'm sure things like that will never happen to me again. This was actually when the story of my martial arts started. But then, to be a good martial artist, you need a lot of the things mentioned here.
Discipline: all martial arts are just like paramilitary, where it takes a whole lot of things; you have to do whatever you are being asked to do by the seniors or the coach. You must respect all the coaches and the seniors; you must be ready to do any task given to you, even if the task is hard. Honestly, the tasks are always hard, and we don't have a choice but to do them. You must not fight outside if you are being pushed to the wall. There are so many things inside discipline that you need to learn; you have a certain food to eat and all that, and the funniest part is that you just have to do it all regardless, or else you will not learn, and neither will you get a promotion to another class.
Self-control is so important in martial arts. You must be able to control your emotions. You must be calm. It's bad and against all martial arts rules to go outside and fight without being pushed to the wall. This is because there are lots of things that are being taught to us, and using this technique outside of the training or to fight an ordinary person can lead to a whole lot of things, and if care is not taken, you can take a life in the blink of an eye.
The kind of training we received is different from what the average person can do, so we are to learn to control our emotions and not let anyone get into our brain.
Perseverance: this is the ability to struggle through your training sections and be able to reach your goals regardless of how hard all the training can be.
The truth is that no sport is easy, but sincerely, when you put your energy into it, you will learn and gain a lot of things. Sharp reflexes, the ability to decide within a second because you can't be in martial arts and not be able to think so fast, flexibility, and a whole lot more benefits are in martial arts. If you can ensure the pain in martial arts, then you will be able to endure the pain that life will throw at you. It's not easy, but we keep doing it, and the motor is no pain, no gain, and no gain, no success.
All the pictures in this post were taken by me, and the people in them are my teammates.
I really enjoyed martial arts when I was considerably younger and i found it a great way to stay in shape. You do need to be dedicated though, just like you mention. Most of the time though I think that people almost become addicted to it if they were meant to participate in it, because it is a very unique sport to participate in. I miss it, but I simply don't have the time anymore.
