World Polio Day
World Polio Day falls on the birthday of the US bacteriologist Jonas Salk, the discoverer of the polio vaccine, and was first proclaimed by UNICEF and the WHO in 1998. The aim of World Polio Day is to motivate the population to receive booster vaccinations in order to prevent a return of the almost eradicated disease. Today, there are still severe outbreaks of polio in some countries of the world.
