Pride Parade Vienna
When I was 16 my Mom told me she would love me no matter what, whether I would bring home a girl or boy, she would always love me. My way to rebel back then: Go to church, undergo confirmation, hope for wife, kids, dog and the normal life and wish me being gay would just go away. This could have been one of those many stories of wasting a life, in the closet. You're in the dark and everyone around you sees and knows you're in this closet. You try so hard nobody ever would ask you the question: "Hey, Alex why are you punishing yourself, come out there." It is the environment that matters, how people behave in it and not what they say, it has just recently struck me again when I dissolved my mother's household in my birth town. No ground for one's self-esteem to lift up when discovering to be different. If there's no pride parade, no institution, no event, no Aidshilfe, no drag show, no queer contact point, no gay clubbing, no same-sex married couples in the neighborhood, nobody holding hands in the streets this place is doomed. How do you know you're straight and heterosexual if you never had a relationship with a human being of the same sex? Social normalization processes then go so far as to say that 5 years later, when I moved to Vienna - and I remember the afternoon very well when my friend Uschi Winauer sat on my desk and confronted me with my real inner self - I couldn't even bring myself to say I'm gay because I had had a girlfriend experience once in summer. That's how gays make life more difficult for bisexuals, too, another sexual orientation that is not a phase. Today marks the second year I march together side-by-side with my political party Volt Österreich Volt Wien Volt Europa : If you don't take time for change, a conversation, breaking silence, one social media post, then change will not happen and you will just leave yourself to others. How important is it for you to lead an honest life with yourself?
