Sign Language Market Day in Osaka, 2024

After returning to Japan, I was looking for something to learn and, if possible, something that would help others with my skills, and I heard that a friend of mine was attending a sign language club.

My sister had also studied sign language at one time, and perhaps because of that influence, I was able to sign a little, but I never had the opportunity to go to a sign language club. This time I hope to be able to sit down and learn sign language well.

The other day, I participated in a sign language marché organized by the members of the sign language club.

The Sign Language Marche is a market where various stalls are set up in a part of the shopping arcade, and people talk to each other using sign language. Beginners of sign language, like me, can communicate with each other by written communication or by using a smartphone, and some deaf people can read the movements of the mouth. It was very meaningful for me to be able to communicate with many different people.

The presentation of a sign language folktale, "Momotaro," a fable that everyone in Japan knows, was performed in sign language. Sign language is a "language. Learning a sign language is like learning a new language; it is a necessary communication tool to enter the world. Through this Sign Language Marche, I felt like I had encountered a new world. But it was a discovery that made me want to work harder at sign language.

日本に帰国後、何か習い事をしたいなぁと思っていて出来れば何かスキルとして残ってそれで、何か少しでも人の為になる何かを探していた時、友人が手話サークルに通っているという話を聞き、私もやってみようと先月から手話サークルに通っています。

姉も手話を学んでいた時期があって、そういった影響からか、私も少しだけ手話ができたのですが、本格的にサークルなどには通う機会はありませんでした。 今回は腰を据えてしっかりと手話を学ぶことが出来たらと思っています。

そんな中、先日、手話サークルのメンバー達が主催し開催した手話マルシェに参加して来ました。

商店街の一部で色々と出店を出して、手話を使って会話をする、手話マルシェ。 私のような手話初心者は筆談や、スマホで意思疏通をしたり、口の動きを読み取ることが出来るろう者の方もいます。 いろんな方と交流が出来て、とても有意義でした。

手話で行ってくれた手話昔話の発表は、日本では誰もが知ってる寓話である「桃太郎」を手話でしてくれ、手話が初級の私も知ってる物語なだけに、あぁ、なんとなく何を言いたいとしてるか分かると思う手話がたくさんありました。 手話は「言語」です。 手話を学ぶと言うことは新しい言語を学ぶようなもので、その世界に入るには必要なコミュニケーションツールです。 この手話マルシェを通して、本当に新しい世界に出会った気分になりました。 でも、それは新しい発見で、もっと手話を頑張ろうと思いました。
