RE: Football Favorites - Diamond Formation

Nice post! Diamond 4-4-2 has largely been pushed out I feel, in the favour of 3-5-2 and I can understand why: with winger backs further forward, and 3 defenders instead of a deeper defensive midfielder, it feels like it can be more flexible in moving across the field (as you called it, morphing). That said, it probably requires a little more strategic understanding from both the coach and players to actually properly execute a 3 defender strategy.
That said, I remember when I was younger, diamond 4-4-2 was a pretty big development in football strategy.

Thank you for your response! You are right, the 3-5-2 is seeing a renesaince, so to speak. :D
It requires a lot of tactic flexibility and is certainly not the easiest strategy to play, but if executed well it can be a very strong formation, especially if you want to have control over the game :)
I love talking football, so I was excited to see the post! I also agree on the "number" naming, as 3-5-2 is really only 3-5-2 on paper.. I think that is why more and more coaches gravitate towards it, the way it moves between 3-5-2, 4-1-3-2 in normal moments, 5-3-2 during defense and sometimes even 1-3-4-2 (with 1 not being the GK) when the two "side-center" defenders go up to help in creation.
