NBA In-Season Tournament: How does it work?
In this video my brother Mark aka MFA goes over how the NBA's new in-season tournament works and how each group is selected. The tournament involves splitting each conference into 3 groups of 5 teams, which are randomly drawn from 5 pots of 3 teams each (listed in order of last year's season rankings). The group stage involves playing each team inside the group twice, one road and one away, while the games count towards the regular season. The top team in each group, and 1 wildcard from each conference make it to the knockout stage. The first knockout stage is the quarter finals, while the losing teams play each other in each conference; once again all games here count towards the regular season. Next is the Semi-finals, which also counts towards the regular season. The Finals will be held in Las Vegas and will not count towards the regular season. Every player in the knockout stages gets a financial bonus, while the champion gets $500,000 per player! Note also that every in-season tournament game will have the court painted in custom tournament colors.
This is the first year that the National Basketball Association (NBA) has included a tournament within the regular season. The goal is to increase the excitement around the early part of the long NBA season. I think it's a great idea, what do you think?

NBA In-Season Tournament: How does it work?
- There are 3 groups of 5 teams in the west and 3 groups of 5 in the east. Groups are selected based on the previous year's regular season records. *see the end of the video for more details on that
Group Play
- Each team plays the teams in their group 1 time. 2 at home and 2 on the road
- These games count towards regular season records
- Group Play games are played only on Tuesdays and Fridays in November
- The top seed in each group will advance to the Knockout Rounds (6 total)
- 2 “wild cards” also advance to the knockout round. The team from each conference with the best record that finished 2nd in its group will move on to the next round
- The 22 teams that do not advance will play 2 regular season games on December 6th and December 8th. The NBA made a formula to determine which teams play out of those 22 teams. I won’t go into that in this video.
- *tie breakers will be shown at the end of the video
Knockout Rounds
Quarter Finals (round of 8)
- Games are on December 4th and December 5th
- The top seed in each conference of the Group Play will play the wild card teams of their respective conference. The games will be played at the top seeds arena
- The other 2 games will be by the other 2 group play leaders. The teams with the better records will play at home.
- These games will count for the regular season standings
- The losing teams of the same conference will play each other on Friday December 8th
- 5th-8th place get $50,000 prize per player
Semifinals (rounds of 4)
- Games are on Dec 7th in Las Vegas (neutral site)
- Semifinals games will count for the regular season standings
- 3rd and 4th place get $100,000 prize per player
Finals (round of 2)
- The finals are in Las Vegas and will be played on Dec 9th
- This final game does NOT count for the regular season standings. All other in-season tournament games count except for the final match
- 1st place get $500,000 prize per player
- 2nd place get $200,000 prize per player
Conclusion
In-season tournament group stage games happen on Tuesdays and Fridays. There are 3 groups of 5 teams for each conference. Each team plays the other teams in their group 1 time. The top seed of each group advances to the knockout rounds. 2 Additional “wild card” teams also advance. These teams were NOT the top seed in their group but had the most wins out of the teams that were not the top seeds. The 8 teams that advance play a single knockout game with the semi finals and finals played at the neutral site of Las Vegas.
*tie breaker
- Head-to-head record in group stage
- Point differential in group stage
- Total points scored in group stage
- Regular season record from 2022-2023 NBA regular season
- Random draw
Choosing the Groups
The NBA created 5 different “pots”. They then randomly chose a team from each pot to get the groups. They did this separately for each conference.
- Pot 1: The teams with the three best prior-season records in a conference.
- Pot 2: The teams with the fourth- through sixth-best prior-season records.
- Pot 3: The teams with the seventh- through ninth-best prior-season records.
- Pot 4: The teams with the 10th-through 12th-best prior-season records.
- Pot 5: The teams with the 13th-through 15th-best prior-season records.
