PL/CZ wedding. My Actifit Report Card: October 26 2024
If it is a Saturday and I wear black pants and ironed shirt instead of my usual trekking outfit, it must be either a funeral or wedding. Yesterday it was the latter.
I drove with my father and two of his friends to a wedding in Cieszyn, a town on the Czech-Polish border. It’s actually two towns separated by a river - Cieszyn on the Polish side and Český Těšín across the river. For centuries it had been a single, ducal city, split only in 1920 when Poland and Czechoslovakia emerged from WWI. Now that both countries are in the EU, the town really looks like one again. People mix freely, living and working as they please. Also the languages become mixed. Polish and Czech are close enough to be mutually comprehensible. I cannot say I understand all in Czech, but for the locals “Žádný problém”.
The bride and the groom are best examples. She is Czech, he is Polish. They will live on the Czech side, but the groom will continue working on the Polish bank of the river. The wedding was a mix, too, with guests from both countries.
