Socializing Pedro. My Actifit Report Card: June 17 2024

Pedro, the dog who is staying with me while his owner is out hiking, is a lonely, melancholic type. He ignores people passing by - which is great when we hike in the mountains- and is not too keen on strangers cuddling him. He has however a difficult time with other dogs. It could be due to his childhood in an animal shelter.

His owner generally separates him from other dogs. I tried some socialising- in a fenced, safe “dog fitness” area. There were two female dogs - one, a retriever, was clearly interested in Pedro but he didn’t pay any attention to her advances. He was more after a puppy female, who was very playful and tried to tease Pedro. He would run after her, but she was smaller, faster and more nimble so Pedro’s attempts to catch her were futile. Both enjoyed the chase.

Then a young male dog entered. He wanted to play with the young female, but Pedro felt like he was the Alfa male and clearly dominated the newcomer. He would try to bite the other dog’s back and subdue him. Being much bigger, I was actually afraid that the smaller dog might be hurt. But Pedro knew the limits and the other dog understood the language. #AliveAndThriving - both.
