INSECTS

The photos that I chose for this week's contest topic were taken this week in the Chicago Botanical Garden. The first time I saw a sphinx/hummingbird moth in my flower garden I thought it was a hummingbird until I looked closer. Similarly to hummingbirds they
hover in midair while they feed on nectar from flowers.

I am not an insect authority, but I found this info about them.

The Sphingidae are a family of moths commonly called sphinx moths, also colloquially known as hawk moths, with many of their caterpillars known as hornworms.
Wikipedia

Here they range from Central America north into the United States and into southern Canada. Known as a Bee Moth in Europe, they seem to range over much of the world

all photos are from my family albums

Very cool insects! I've only seen them a couple of times in my life. It's so cool to see them hover in front of a flower. Impressive how you managed to capture it in flight with its tongue rolled out. Wonderful capture!
If it wasn't a promotion post it would certainly be one of the winning shots!
Thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful and cute insect! They also live occasionally in my region, and we also jokingly call them "hummingbirds."
