Previous champions league third place teams drops straight into the Europa league knockouts because they where deemed deserving based on the quality and criteria that allows them for Europe's premier competition in the first place. Contrary to the previous seasons, the third place teams will have to earn their spot in the Europa league round of 16 by playing against eight Europa league group runners-up in a playoff series fixed to commence on Feb.17 with it's return leg being Feb.24
