My Actifit Report Card: March 20 2022

A Day at the MCG

When we moved to Melbourne, one of the big plusses from my point of view was that it would give me the opportunity to attend more AFL (Australian Rules Football) matches. I invested in the premium level membership of my team fully expecting to go every week.
Shortly afterwards Corona inflicted itself upon us and Melbourne attained the unenviable title of the world's most locked down city.
We haven't been able to go anywhere let alone attend a match.
A new season started this weekend and full crowds are allowed to attend.
My team Collingwood played on Friday night and we weren't able to make that game. My wife's team, Hawthorn played on Sunday afternoon. So we made the trip in by car and parked in Central Melbourne.
Had lunch at Federation square. Here are some of the exhibits there

Then we walked along the Yarra River, crossed Batman Ave and the rat's nest of railway lines that is Jolimont station via footbridge and entered Yarra Park - the home of the mighty MCG.
The G is in many ways the beating heart of Melbourne's sporting identity.
It has lain dormant for the past two years.
70000 people attended a match on Thursday with slightly lower numbers on Wednesday and Saturday.
The game we attended between 2 struggling teams attracted 38000 people.
It was good to be back.
The game itself was pretty average with lots of skill errors and relatively low scoring.
It didn't matter
Melbourne was celebrating life again.
On the way out we noticed the bronze statue of recently deceased cricket legend Shane Warne.
The statue has been fenced off. Underneath there are bouquets of flowers.
Perched on the statue beneath Warne's feet is an array of empty beer bottles and beer cans... only in Australia would this be allowed and recognised as a tribute of sorts.

Glad to see the sun shining and people enjoying themselves in Australia! I understand that the restrictions there have been difficult, but it looks like things are beginning to be restored. Glad you are !ALIVE

It's nice to see everything go back to normal because the people around me are all still worried about covid. It makes me wonder when things will go back to normal in my normal life.

I don't think things will ever go back to the way they were. The community has really been split down the middle. A lot of people are still terrified, but many have just had enough of the stifling measures that were imposed here in Melbourne. Everyone has to adapt at their own pace.

Glad to see Australia is getting back to normal. From what I heard on the news in the US, you had a lot of restrictions. Thanks for sharing the good news.

Yes, things are starting to return to normal. but the cost imposed upon business has been huge.
Many small businesses are closed and it will take a long time for that sector to recover, but at least there is some hope now.
