Walking in Detroit - My Actifit Report Card: October 19 2024

avatar

Hey Actifitters,

Yesterday I had to pick up my race packet for the Detroit half marathon on Sunday. It was at Huntington Place (formerly called Cobo Center) in downtown Detroit, so of course, I took the opportunity to walk the riverfront and other parts of downtown. With this perfect sunny weather, that would have been a real shame not to. You can get out of Huntington Place on the river side, but the first thing I always notice is the People Mover, this elevated track system. It's pretty cool when you can get other landmarks in the same frame, like the Renaissance Center.

It doesn't beat the early sunset view over the Ambassador Bridge though. This is the bridge we run first to cross over to Canada during the half marathon (or full marathon).

Yes, if you didn't know, the other side of the river is Canada, the city of Windsor, Ontario. We also run along that side during the race.

In case you don't believe me, there's a big flag to prove it!

That Princess Riverboat looks pretty cool. It's funny actually, I never saw it leave its dock station. But I know they do have cruises.

The next stop along the river is Hart Plaza and its fountain. It was obviously switched off yesterday.

The skyline from there is also beautiful.

And of course, like I always say, everything is better with a sunset!

The next landmark may look a little weird, it's like the Stargate from Stargate SG-1. It's actually the Michigan Labor Legacy monument, or Transcending arch. The scientology building just behind adds to the weirdness I think. It's not very exotic, but weird enough that I will use it for my entry to Around The World contest:

Transcending Arch, Detroit, Michigan, USA

I like to play with the angle and catch the sunset or other entities through the gate.

The views on the GM Renaissance Center are also pretty good from this spot.

Just crossing the next street, you can find 'The Fist', dedicated to boxer Joe Louis. Some day, I ought to research why Joe Louis seems to be famous around here, I don't think he was from Detroit.

The logical next stop should have been the 'Spirit of Detroit', this big bronze statue. But somebody was in the process of cleaning it, blocking the view. So we kept walking till we hit the Guardian Building on Griswold St. The inside of this building is the best part but even the outside is really cool. I also like the contrast with the modern 'Experience Zuzu' restaurant in front of it.

One final view of the RenCen before leaving the area. I read the future of this building is in question, as GM announced they will be moving out next year.

Walking back to my car, I was able to catch the sunset between two buildings.

And a final view of a different part of the skyline. By the way, you probably noticed, there aren't that many tall buildings in Detroit.

When I made it back home, it was night time already. But unlike me, Kaia didn't have enough steps for the day. So we quickly went to the forest, so she could run off-leash for a bit.

And that was it for this nice day. Detroit still gets a bad rap, but it's really improved and I always enjoy just walking around in Downtown. Of course, in spite of the early race on Sunday, I went to bed way too late. Every year, the same mistake... It's okay, spoiler alert: the race went fine today.

As always, thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow.

Thanks! Detroit is !INDEED much nicer than most people think. And with that weather, perfect! One thing that can't be skipped is Kaia's walk! The half marathon was okay, more details in my Exhaust post hopefully soon.

Hi @manuvert, I enjoyed the walk around your city, the image you selected for the contest is beautiful, very eye catching and fits the name of the contest go around the world hehehe, that arch is nice although I would have also chosen Kaia's photo 🥰😍.

I will support your image, cheers.

Thanks! Glad you liked the city walk in Detroit! Since it was built, that arch has always piqued my curiosity and I thought it was worth sharing it. Yeah, Kaia is !INDEED contest worthy, but I don't think she qualifies for 'Around The World' !lolz
Have a great day!
