I'm back here to this beautiful community with this great contest that has a really good question about beauty. It made me organize my ideas and form an opinion that actually has changed a lot over the years but finally I have something more complete, so I'll share it with you today.

Estoy devuelta a este hermosa comunidad con este gran concurso que tiene una muy buena pregunta sobre la belleza. Me hizo organizar mis ideas y formar una opinión que realmente ha cambiado bastante con los años pero finalmente tengo algo más concreto, así que lo compartiré con ustedes hoy.

Why do you think society places such a high value on beauty when it serves no functional purpose?🌹

¿Por qué crees que la sociedad le otorga un valor tan elevado a la belleza si esta no posee un propósito funcional?🌹

I want to start with another question: it doesn't really have a functional purpose?. Okay, here's the thing; Imagine the best flower you can think about, imagine the most stunning natural landscape, think about a painting from a famous artist that you like, remember your favorite song. Although all those things have various characteristics that stand out for you the truth is that one of the main reasons you like it is because you can find certain beauty in it.

Quiero empezar con otra pregunta: ¿Realmente no tiene ningún propósito funcional?. Ok, este es mi punto: imagina la mejor flor que puedas pensar, imagina el paisaje natural más deslumbrante, piensa en una pintura de algún artista famoso que te guste, recuerda tu canción favorita. A pesar de que todas esas cosas tienen diversas características que destacan para ti la verdad es que una de las razones principales por las que te gusta es porque encuentras cierta belleza en ello.

I believe that there's various types of beauty that are not necessarily the type that is most common to think about (physical beauty). There's beauty in nature, in music, in a painting, in a book, in a sculpture, in architecture, in the clouds... And of course in our bodies. But the thing is to be aware that there are various stereotypes in beauty canons that despite what society made us think I believe that those do not apply for everything nor anyone.

Considero que hay diversos tipos de belleza que no son necesariamente el tipo en que más comúnmente se piensa (belleza física). Hay belleza en la naturaleza, en la música, en una pintura, en un libro, en una escultura, en la arquitectura, en las nubes... Y por supuesto en nuestros cuerpos. Pero la clave está en ser conscientes de que hay varios estereotipos en los cánones de belleza que a pesar de lo que la sociedad nos hizo pensar yo creo que esos estereotipos no se aplican para todo ni para todos.

Those stereotypes are the ones that actually are not functional at all because of how unrealistic they are. Not everyone is a supermodel because simply we all have different types of body, and not having those specific features doesn't make us ugly it just make us different and that's fine. Can you imagine if we all looked the same? Boring.

Esos estereotipos son los que realmente no son funcionales en lo absoluto por lo irrealista que son. No todo el mundo es una super modelo porque simplemente todo tenemos un tipo de cuerpo distinto y no tener esos rasgos específicos no nos hace feos sólo nos hace diferentes, y eso está bien. ¿Te imaginas si todos luciéramos igual? Aburrido.

And honestly if you are able to open your mind and see beyond what society imposed on you, you'll be able to find beauty in what is supposed to be ugly. For example, I find beauty in death. Graveyards, tombstones, the afterlife, although all these things are commonly feared and seen as ugly or bad, I believe these things can transmit peace, rest, nostalgia for what it was and if we look into nature death can bring new life.

Y sinceramente si eres capaz de abrir tu mente y ver más allá de lo que la sociedad impuso sobre ti serás capaz de encontrar belleza en lo que se supone que es feo. Por ejemplo, yo encuentro belleza en la muerte. Cementerios, lapidas, la vida después de l muerte, a pesar de que estas cosas son comúnmente temidas y vistas como algo feo o malo, creo que estas cosas transmiten paz, descanso, nostalgia por lo que alguna vez fue y si miramos la naturaleza encontraremos que la muerte trae vida nueva.

See how we all can have a different concept for what is beautiful or not? Probably you won't share my opinion over what I think is pretty but that doesn't mean it is not beautiful, that only means that we have different perspectives but again, your perception does not invalidates my own perception, therefore you cannot tell me what is beauty as much as I can't tell you what is beauty and what is not.

¿Ves como todos tenemos un concepto distinto sobre lo que es hermoso y lo que no? Probablemente tú no compartas mi opinión sobre lo que yo pienso que es bonito pero eso no significa que no sea hermoso, eso sólo significa que tenemos diferentes perspectivas pero repito, tu percepción no invalida la mía por lo que tú no puedes decirme lo que es bello tanto como yo no puedo decirte lo que es bello y lo que no.

But I haven't said why I think is functional and here's my opinion: it is pleasant to perceive something beautiful. When we listen to that song, see that gorgeous painting or that special person, when you see a beautiful sunset or whatever makes you immediately think about beauty you get stimulated by the neurotransmitters that activate in your brain when you perceive those stimulus, therefore the chemical reaction make you produce the hormones that at the same time make you feel nice. That pleasant feeling.

Pero no he dicho porqué pienso que es funcional y esta es mi opinión: es agradable percibir algo hermoso. Cuando escuchamos esa canción, vemos esa preciosa pintura o esa persona especial, cuando ves un hermoso crepúsculo o lo que sea que inmediatamente te haga pensar en la belleza eres estimulado por los neurotransmisores que se activan en tu cerebro cuando percibes esos estímulos, por lo tanto la reacción química hace que produzcas las hormona que a su vez te harán sentir bien. Esa sensación placentera.

That's what makes it functional because at the end that feeling that we get make us feel nice and that's the only purpose of beauty. Just make you feel that pleasant feeling that you get whenever you see something pretty. So is beauty overrated? I don't think so. I think is one of human wonders to be able to enjoy what we perceive daily and give it a meaning to make it pretty.

Eso la hace funcional porque al final esa sensación que sentimos nos hace sentir bien y ese es el único propósito de la belleza. Sólo hacerte sentir esa sensación placentera que sientes cuando ves algo bonito. ¿Entonces la belleza está sobrevalorada? No lo creo. Yo creo que es una de las maravillas humanas el poder ser capaz de disfrutar lo que percibimos a diario y otorgarle un significado para hacerlo bello.

So enjoy the beauty you see around you but never let anyone tell you what is pretty and what is not. You are the one to decide that, doesn't matter if no one thinks the same as you.

Así que disfruta la belleza que ves a tu alrededor pero nunca dejes a nadie decirte qué es bonito y qué no lo es. Tú eres quien decide eso, no importa si nadie piensa lo mismo que tú.

And here's a friendly reminder: probably the most beautiful thing you will ever see is yourself 💞.

For this week contest there was another question that I think doesn't quite match with the previous one but I'll quickly reply to it as well.

Being judge of a beauty contest, I will just simply say that all the contestant are pretty because I swear I'll be able to find something that I would genuinely consider to be nice and beautiful in each one of them. I don't know if that would be consider objective or not, the truth is that I wouldn't be able to decide who wins. And even less decide who loses because I would feel so bad to disqualify someone that I just wouldn't do it hahaha.

Ser una jueza de concursos de belleza. Simplemente diría que todas las concursantes son bonita porque les juro que sería capaz de encontrar algo que genuinamente consideraría bueno y hermoso en cada una de ellas. No sé si eso se consideraría objetivo o no pero la verdad es que no sería capaz de decidir quién gana. Y mucho menos decidir quién pierde porque me sentiría tan mal por descalificar a alguien que simplemente no lo haría jajaja.

So never ever offer me that job, I'll completely suck at it😂.

Así que nunca me ofrezcan ese trabajo, apestaría😂.

Hello @mandysmoon. Your statement reflects my belief as well in what I consider of beauty. Welcome to the club fellow cemetery appreciator:

There is beauty in life as well as death, if we perceive it on our own accord and not what others impose on us as standards.

Judging a beauty contest. I see no need for them, so that job would surely be one that I'd abhor.

Everything you said in your post is so very right! I think unfortunately, that society places a marketable label on 'beauty' and it indicates that if you do this, or use this product, or wear this outfit, or eat this food (and the list could go on and on...) you too, will be beautiful like the model is in the marketing advertisement. That is where I think the emphasis is on too much.

Speaking from a soft Goth style, the perception of beauty is unique in each of us.
