"Ultras Sur" is Real Madrid's oldest, most violent and controversial fan group. They are famous for their fanbase of Real Madrid, displaying threatened banners in the field, standing for the whole of 90 minutes with fireworks and roaring like a storm to scare the opponents to death. In simple terms, they made Santiago Bernabeu a 'Hell' for their opponents. When they sat in the South Stand, the players were afraid to go there. And this is no joke. The Ultras were really a group to stay clear of. In fact they still are today. The group was started in 1980 by Jose Luis Ochaita, who was famous for his violence and was banished as a punishment. The man was arrested in 1998 after flying a Nazi flag into a football field in Germany. He was then suspended for life from watching a Real Madrid match for hitting a referee during El Classico. Now the question is what makes Ultras Sur so controversial?
What sets Ultras Sur apart from other fan groups is its agenda outside of politics and sports. They operate outside the usual rules of engagement of being a fan. They are supporters of the 1950s Spanish dictator General Franco. They are very homophobic, racist and very right-wing. They believe in violence. They used to bring racist banners in the field, if they played badly they would even boo their own players and even do violence. In 2014, Florentino Perez banned the "Ultras Sur" from the Santiago Bernabeu. Many of you might ask how did the Ultras react after this ban from the Real Madrid president. The Ultras created vandalism at Florentino Perez's house and broke his wife's grave. Along with threatening him with his life if he doesn't resign. Just think how terrible they are.
Now many more of you can ask why would Perez even imagine of bringing them back to the stadium. Well according to many sources, Real Madrid has secret agreements with Ultras Sur. Madrid handles them secretly due to controversy. The Ultras have a relationship with the big players and managers of the club. There are also many Ultras Sur followers in the peaceful Grada Fans RMCF that Perez later established after banning them. Although no proof of this has come to light. Perez has also brought the Ultras Sur in important champions league games against Wolfsburg, Paris Saint Germain, Atletico Madrid. According to Spanish media, most likely their next call-up will be in the match against Paris Saint Germain. Real Madrid are already behind by a goal after losing 1-0 in the first leg, so they'll have to turn things around fast.
90 minutes are a long time at the Santiago Bernabeu and with the Ultras Sur at the South Stand it is even more terrifying. Although they are controversial, right-wing, they love Real Madrid more than their lives. Now let's see if Florentino Perez really brings them back.
