Besides coaching women's basketball at a major university, Pat Summitt also coached women's basketball at international tournaments. At the international level, her top achievement came as head coach of the US Olympic team which won the Gold MEdal at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games.

Her coaching record and achievements placed Pat Summitt among the ranks of the greatest motivators of her day.She was a motivational speaker and an author of two self-help books: Reach for the Summitt and (with co-author Sally Jenkins) Raise the Roof (1998). In 2013, with help from Sally Jenkins, she had also written her memoir, Sum It Up.

In addition to leading her team to 8 NCAA championships, Pat Summitt was named NCAA Coach of the Year 7 times (1983, 1987, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1998, and 2004). In 1999 she was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2000 she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame-- the highest possible honor for anyone associated with the game of basketball. In 2012 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a civilian can achieve in the United States.
