About the Quote
Normally we start things with the intent to finish them. Ideally, we do something from start to finish without interruption. Should interruptions take place, we keep going until what we started is finally finished.
Some things which get interrupted can only be completed by starting over Even if we do better on the redo than on the original attempt, we know that the win came at a price (at the very least, time and other resources).
Then there are things which don't offer us the option of a redo, yet the interruption killed whatever momentum or groove we had going for us. This is common to competitions which are scored by judges. If we simply quit at the moment of failure, we drop to the bottom of the event rankings. While not fun to do, we pick up where we left off and finish as best as we can for the highest score we can get after the interruptions. While there is always a chance to recover enough to finish in prize-winning position, it's best to finish the event whatever the final score ends up being.
Some (More) Information about Nastia Liukin
Nastia Liukin qualified to be on the US Olympic team at the 2008 Being Summer Games. There she led Team USA to its 2nd consecutive Silver Medal for team competition. Individually, Liukin won the Gold Medal for the all-around competition, the Silver Medal for balance beam, and the Bronze medal for floor exercise. For her specialty event, the uneven bars, Liukin and He Kexin from China finished tied for 1st place. Due to the tie-breaking procedures implemented for the 2008 Beijing Games, the Gold Medal went to He Kexin and Liukin received the Silver Medal.
Despite the disappointment of missing a Gold Medal due to a technicality rather than competitive performance, Nastia Liukin ended the 2008 Beijing Games as the most decorated gymnast of those Olympics at 5 total Medals. On the strength of her Olympic performance, Liukin was named Individual Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation.
