Todavía se escucha el eco del primer ¡Play ball! este año en Grandes Ligas, y tengo el placer de anunciarles esta propuesta de reporte semanal, donde quiero actualizar cómo se van desempeñando las estrellas cubanas en el mejor béisbol del mundo. La selección es subjetiva, pero trato de enfocarme en jugadores no solo que sean regulares en sus equipos, sino que en años recientes hayan logrado un impacto siendo líderes en los mismos, y también descollar hacia afuera. Todos los años sigo el béisbol estadounidense, pero la oportunidad de compartir una arista del mismo aquí en Hive —en plan aficionado/analista— me dice que esta temporada será especial. Ahora algo de contexto para entrar en calor.

Hello, community. You can still hear the echo of the first Play Ball! this year in Major League Baseball, and I am pleased to announce this proposal for a weekly report, where I want to update you on how Cuban stars are performing in the best baseball in the world. The selection is subjective, but I try to focus on players who are not only regulars in their teams, but who in recent years have made an impact by being leaders in their teams, and also stand out outside them. Every year I follow American baseball, but the opportunity to share a side of it here on Hive —as a fan/analyst— tells me this season will be special. Now for some context to warm up.

Un acuerdo efímero

Lo mismo que un merengue en la puerta de un colegio duró la implementación de un acuerdo entre la Federación Cubana de Béisbol y Major League Baseball, que permite a nuestros peloteros firmar con las organizaciones estadounidenses sin la necesidad de abandonar el país o desertar de una delegación en un evento internacional. Las condiciones eran similares a las que hoy rigen para los jugadores de Asia, región donde las ligas, al igual que la cubana, no van a remolque del calendario de MLB. La dinámica aquí es diferente a la que podemos apreciar en las hermanas ligas invernales del Caribe, por razones que dimanan de su relación con la organización que dirige Rob Manfred.

Imaginemos lo complicado de construir puentes entre Cuba y Estados Unidos que la categoría principal del artículo que rindió cuenta de la suspensión del acuerdo en el Washington Post no era "Deportes" sino "Seguridad Nacional". Y así quedó aplazada la concreción del sueño de que los profesionales cubanos lleguen a Grandes Ligas con la misma tranquilidad que un japonés o un dominicano. Es importante tener este aspecto en cuenta porque hablamos de muchachos que están sometidos a una presión que no tienen sus compañeros (por ejemplo, no pueden viajar "a recargar las pilas" en casa al término de la temporada, y seguramente ustedes vieron la vergonzante y exclusivamente cubana situación que se vivió durante el Clásico Mundial en Florida).

Yo he sido muy duro valorando la actuación de nuestros peloteros años atrás, comparándolos con las grandes estrellas sin mensurar el efecto negativo de las condiciones en que han decidido cumplir la meta de enfrentarse a los mejores. No obstante, las cosas han cambiado en las últimas temporadas, y hoy podemos decir que tenemos estrellas que nos enorgullecen (aunque no olvido la actitud de la mayoría ante la convocatoria al Clásico) como Yordan Álvarez, José Abreu, Randy Arozarena o Néstor Cortés (que ganó su primera salida anoche), en tanto figuras de gran potencial como Luis Robert, Yoan Moncada, y José Adolis García, luchan por cimentar su posición y asaltar el estrellato. Desde aquí los estaremos acompañando en su apuesta, y comenzamos ya.

A short-lived agreement

The implementation of an agreement between the Cuban Baseball Federation and Major League Baseball, which allows our players to sign with U.S. organizations without the need to leave the country or defect from a delegation in an international event, lasted as long as a meringue at the door of a school. The conditions were similar to those that today apply to players from Asia, a region where the leagues, like the Cuban one, aren't attached to the MLB calendar. The dynamics here are different from what we can see in the Caribbean winter leagues, for reasons that stem from their relationship with the organization led by Rob Manfred.

Imagine how complicated it is to build bridges between Cuba and the United States that the main category of the article that reported the suspension of the agreement in the Washington Post was not "Sports" but "National Security". And so the dream of Cuban professionals reaching the Major Leagues with the same peace of mind as a Japanese or a Dominican was postponed. It is essential to take this aspect into account because we are talking about boys who are subjected to pressure that their peers don't have (for example, they cannot travel "to recharge their batteries" at home at the end of the season, and surely they saw the shameful and exclusively Cuban situation that took place during the World Classic in Florida).

I have been very harsh in evaluating the performance of our players years ago, comparing them with the great stars without measuring the negative effect of the conditions in which they have decided to fulfill the goal of facing the best. However, things have changed in recent seasons, and today we can say that we have stars that make us proud (although I do not forget the attitude of most of them before the call to the Classic) as Yordan Alvarez, Jose Abreu, Randy Arozarena or Nestor Cortes (who won its first start yesterday), while figures of great potential as Luis Robert, Yoan Moncada, and Jose Adolis Garcia, struggle to cement their position and assault the stardom. From here we will be accompanying them in their bid, and we start now.

El cubano —con todo el respeto por los hermanos mexicanos— tuvo un Clásico Mundial de ensueño, y aprovecha ese impulso para arrancar con buen pie su temporada con los Tampa Bay Rays. Es un jugador electrizante, el típico hombre-show, que en cuatro juegos exhibe .285 como promedio de bateo, ya despachó su primer jonrón, y contabiliza tres compañeros traídos al plato. El equipo ha absorbido la energía de Arozarena y otros jugadores como su coterráneo Yandy Díaz para mantener en cero la casilla de las derrotas tras cuatro partidos.

The Cuban —with all due respect to the Mexican brothers— had a dream World Baseball Classic and is taking advantage of that momentum to start his season with the Tampa Bay Rays on the right foot. El nacido en la central provincia de Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, tiene una oportunidad de oro para demostrar que tiene madera de estrella, en tanto conserva la confianza de ser regular indiscutido en el line-up de los Rangers. Todavía no cuenta extrabases pero es cuestión de tiempo que inaugure ese departamento. En cualquier caso, está viendo bien la pelota con el bate (.333 de AVE), aunque, de momento, es su defensa en la pradera central la dimensión que más palmas se está llevando. Por cierto, los domiciliados en el hermoso Globe Life Field también exhiben un excelente inicio de temporada, si bien cedieron su primera derrota ayer lunes ante Baltimore.

Cuban Sox

En una segunda versión, ahora sin José "Pito" Abreu pero con la sangre joven y prometedora de Oscar Colás, natural de Santiago de Cuba, los White Sox mantienen su base cubana con Luis Robert y Yoan Moncada en la vanguardia, y Yasmani Grandal en la cobertura. Por este concepto sigo muchísimo al equipo, que a veces parece que lo tiene todo para comerse el mundo pero termina cediendo "en la chiquita". En lo que a los cubanos respecta, salvo en una racha de varios partidos de Moncada bateando en el clutch, la verdad es que no les fue bien en la larga distancia en 2022.

El oriundo de Cienfuegos parece ser el más en forma hasta el momento, propulsado sin dudas por su experiencia con Cuba en el Clásico Mundial, donde hizo el Todos Estrellas. Batea para .429 de promedio en cinco juegos, con 9 indiscutibles y de ellos 2 son cuadrangulares. Moncada tiene que sacar este año todo lo que tiene, porque se ha quedado a deber respecto al potencial que se le asoció tras ser contratado, y ya ha pasado algún tiempo desde entonces.

The native of Cienfuegos seems to be the fittest so far, undoubtedly boosted by his experience with Cuba in the World Classic, where he made the All-Star team. He is batting for a .429 average in five games, with 9 hits and 2 of them are homers. Moncada has to get everything he has this year, because he has fallen short of the potential that was associated with him after he was hired, and it has been some time since then.

Luis Robert tampoco ha comenzado mal, pero el equipo en parte sí atendiendo a que, si bien solo han salido al terreno de juego en cinco ocasiones, ya tienen balance negativo. Igual en el último partido resultaron vencidos a razón de un pitcheo que estuvo de lágrimas, como solemos decir por acá. Robert ha pegado 6 inatrapables en 23 turnos al bate, de ellos 2 jonrones pero sin compañeros en las bases. Su OBP inicia en números rojos (.261), y quizás su labor a la defensa sea lo más destacado para él de momento.

Luis Robert has not had a bad start either, but the team has had a bad start because, although they have only been out on the field five times, they already have a negative balance. Cuban Astros

Con su primer título de Serie Mundial bien fresco, el tunero Yordan Álvarez ha comenzado el 2023 donde mismo dejó las cosas la pasada temporada. A diferencia de muchos de sus coterráneos, Air Yordan tuvo un aterrizaje más tranquilo en el béisbol estadounidense, debido a que no fue mucho lo que jugó en Cuba. Pienso que no tener esa presión mediática encima le ha permitido tener una estabilidad emocional que se refleja en una envidiable eficacia en el clutch, y en general en una constancia inusitada para un cubano allí en su rendimiento. Como diría cualquier reguetonero boricua, "los números hablan por sí solos". En la noche del lunes largó su jonrón número 100 en Grandes Ligas, lo que le vale para ser el quinto jugador en la historia que ha logrado esa cifra con menos veces al bate. El cuarto lugar, superándolo por solo un turno, es el señor Aaron Judge, en una lista en la que incluso falta Mike Trout.

With his first World Series title still fresh in his mind, Tunero Yordan Alvarez has started 2023 where he left off last season. Unlike many of his peers, Air Yordan had a quieter landing in U.S. baseball because he didn't play much in Cuba. I think that not having that media pressure on him has allowed him to have an emotional stability that is reflected in an enviable efficiency in the clutch, and in general in an unusual constancy for a Cuban there in his performance. As any Puerto Rican reggaetonero would say, "the numbers speak for themselves". On Monday night he hit his 100th home run in the Major Leagues, making him the fifth player in history to reach that number in fewer at-bats. In fourth place, ahead of him by just one at-bat, is Aaron Judge, in a list that even lacks Mike Trout.

En lo que se refiere a Abreu, se trata de una interesante apuesta de parte de los Astros, si asumimos que no tuvo una gran temporada tras resultar el MVP de la Liga Americana en tiempos de Covid-19. Las fichas están apuntando a la gran calidad que ha cultivado como jugador, celoso con la selección de los lanzamientos, técnico y con suficiente poder para con un simple movimiento de sus muñecas lograr piezas de bateo como la que muestro debajo. Su promedio de bateo está en un decente valor de .381 para ir entrando en confianza en su nueva ciudad, con un prometedor OBP de .458. Solo resta por ver si recuperará la vena jonronera, que perdió en su último año en Chicago con tan solo 15 vuelacercas.

As far as Abreu is concerned, this is an interesting gamble on the part of the Astros, if we assume that he did not have a great season after being the MVP of the American League in Covid's times. The chips are pointing to the great quality he has cultivated as a player, zealous with pitch selection, technical, and with enough power to with a simple flick of his wrists achieve batting pieces like the one I show below. His batting average is at a decent .381 to build confidence in his new city, with a promising OBP of .458. It remains to be seen if he will recover the home run vein, which he lost in his last year in Chicago with only 15 home runs.
