Reverse Stafford as an Excuse [eng/срп] Обрнути Стафорд као изговор

When I was a kid and start learning chess, one of the first traps we were learning was so called Légal’s Checkmate, named by after the French chess player, Sire de Légal (1702–1792), and usually going from Phillidor Defense (C41) like this:

Then they taught us that a variant of Légal’s Checkmate with black pieces is also possible, stemming from Petrov’s Defense. However, when after 35 years I returned to chess, that inverted variant with black pieces was no longer called ‘Reversed Légal’s Checkmate’ but – ‘Stafford Gambit’! It is named like that after the Lowens vs. Stafford, US correspondence game played in 1950.

Назван је тако према дописној партији Ловенс – Стафорд која је одиграна у САД 1950.

So the original Stafford Gambit is played with black pieces, and if you’ve ever heard of International Master Eric Rosen, you’ve probably heard of the Stafford Gambit as well. He is the greatest promoter of this objectively dubious, but extremely venomous opening, brimming with traps. If you want to know how to refute it, you should see how strong FIDE master Gauri Shankar (lichess blitz rating at 2541) deals with it, and how super grandmasters GM Adhiban Baskaran (a.k.a. ‘The Beast’ – rating 2672) and GM Hikaru Nakamura (2736) destroy Rosen’s favorite opening:

And of course, instead of the normal name ‘Reverse Stafford’ (or ‘Mirror Stafford’), we again have a completely non-intuitive name: Boden-Kieseritzky Gambit. WTF?! As you consider who made up those stuff, let’s look at how this Revesed Stafford is going:

At this moment, White can аlready secure a material and positional advantage with a ♘g5 move. And he can even afford luxury and do a little mess with the castling… which opens space for a nice blunder by the opposite side:

And here is the famous “Oh no, my Queen!” moment – followed by an insidious, forced checkmate 😃

Now we come to the key question:
The new rules of the Chess Brothers League have been improved once again, and I have a suggestion for a different scoring of the tournament. The current scoring goes like this: The winner gets 14 points, the runner-up 12 points, the third 10, then 4. 9, 5. 8, 6. 7, 7. 6, 8. 5, 9. and 10. four points each, and everyone else to the last are getting one point each. My suggestion is the following: If 17 people appear in the tournament, then the first one gets 17 points, the second place winner 16, the third one 15 and so on until the last one who gets only one point. If 30 people appear in the tournament, then the first one gets 30 points, the second place winner 29, the third one 28 and so on until the last one who gets only one point. What would we gain with this?
Firstly, since the number of points for the winner is not always the same, the best chess players would have to appear in the tournament defending the points won, because if they are absent, they can be threatened by someone with a higher number of points won in a tournament with more participants. In this way, regular participation would be stimulated. Secondly, lower ranked players would get a different number of points and thus be able to accurately measure the progress they made, which would not be possible if all those who failed to enter the top ten in at least one tournament have 8 points each.
Furthermore, the reward system for only the top eight could be modified as follows: At the end of the season, the sum of all liquid funds raised for prizes is divided by the total number of points awarded to all participants. This gives the value of one point expressed in HIVE or HIVE Dollar. Then, the obtained value of points is multiplied by the points won by each member and everyone shares the prize – with the best receiving the most, as deserved. In that way, membership in the community would be stimulated for the largest possible participation and attraction of new members to our platform.
So what was Reverse Stafford excuse for @lighteye?

Затим се добијеном вредношћу бода множе освојени бодови сваког члана и сви деле награду – при чему најбољи добијају заслужено највише. На тај начин би се стимулисало чланство у заједници на што масовније учешће и привлачење нових чланова на нашу платформу.

I really feel this would make it easier for some players,Imagine winning a tournament with 30players(30points) in R1 and the remaining tournaments have less than 20 players, it will be difficult for anyone to catch up as long as the winner keeps playing and nicking small points.
For the prizes, whichever way works, the community is getting bigger and we have 3 tournaments weekends so any active player will always be on the receiving end of some.
And yes the brilliant game idea is cool and tempting. I will be looking to sacrifice like 4 pieces against @lighteye in our next game(so help me God) 😄
If the community is getting bigger, then it will be easier to overthrow a winner of the first tournament, @samostically :)

Very interesting suggestions! Thanks for taking your time to think about this and share them. The only thing is, it would have been great to have them before launching the announcement post. I talked to my partners about this, although they are and will be out of town a bit busy these days. About the points scored, remember that it is not unlikely that someone will miss at least one tournament, so players from 11th position down will not get 8 points all of them at the end. Otherwise, the scoring system and prize distribution plan you propose are interesting. I wonder if StayOutOfTheRZ and SchamanGerbert have used that scoring system before.

On this first read I must admit that I don’t completely understand (Reversed Légal’s Checkmate’ / Stafford Gambit) but you did include more of Geri’s Games so I can enjoy that.
Very interesting suggestions on possible rules changes but I feel safe that none of our great three tournaments will exclude anyone for bad play or low chess rating. 🙂
