Two Tragic Boxing Deaths this week - Is Boxing more dangerous than other sports?

I enjoy watching boxing. There is something primitive about the violence but it is still a skilful sport in which two people use guile, strength and speed to win the contest. The levels of fitness are incredible and the sport has excellent governance but still, it is sad that occasionally participants lose their life.

After reading the story this morning of Argentinian, Hugo Santillan and, Russian fighter Maxim Dadashev who both tragically died after bouts this week, I wondered if Boxing was, in fact, the most dangerous sport as I had an inkling, that despite the usual calls for it to be banned, it wasn't.

There are many ways to measure how dangerous a sport is, but I just wanted to look at deaths. No point in looking at injuries as of course, the aim of boxing is to injure your opponent!

So just in terms of the odds of dying, boxing doesn't even enter the top 5!

I left out base-jumping and sky-diving, so that left these three sports which may surprise you!

  1. Swimming
    Deaths per 100,000 population: 1.77
Odds of dying: 1 in 56,587

  2. Cycling
    Deaths per 100,000 population: 1.08
Odds of dying: 1 in 92,325

  3. Running
    Deaths per 100,000 population: 1.03
Odds of dying: 1 in 97,455

Things like horse riding and racing (I won't even mention the tragic number of horses killed each year), all the other forms of contact sports also result in many deaths each year.

Do what you enjoy, with passion and remember the dangers but don't let this detract from your enjoyment!

To me boxing is a physical combat sports that has alot of long term damage to the person involved in the sport of boxing. Because there is alot of damages that can be cause to the brain due to excessive hitting and continuous fighting.
In the real sense boxing is a deadly sports because of its long-term health effects on the life of the boxer @leedsunited

I think you're right my friend. These statistics don't include the longer-lasting damage, but I also know professional sportspeople who have other forms of life long physical damage.
So should boxing be banned do you think?

It will be difficult to ban boxing because of its global audience and the amount of money involved in the sports . But on a real sense I think boxing needs to be ban, because the sports is too deadly and dangerous

Surprised me too, but thinking about it, I guess this includes leisure cycling too...on roads so I think the odds were created using figures for every one killed on a bike. It was actually much more difficult to do a like-for-like analysis but I wanted to highlight the fact there is danger in all sporting activities.

I guess if we include leisure cyclists, we should have included everyone who gets into a fight after a night out on the beer!

I am shocked that even running is in the list!!!!

Swimming and cycling is a bit understandable, but running no hehehe.

I was also shocked to lrarn of he secodn death, I had read about the first death a few days ago and then I saw another headline yesterday!! So tragic to the sports world.

I remember some years back a similar debate like this one was going on about banning or checking how to reduce deaths and everything just died out.

What makes boxing dangerous is that to win you have to hit the opponents head repeatedly(to win points) and this cause repeated damage to the brain!!

The sport should be adjusted and matches should be stopped even if the ailing opponent wants to continue, sometimes this never give up attitude has cost boxers their lives!!!

Referees should make those decisions in case they see fit to stop the match.

I really never thought in a boxing match both fighters will die. I heard news about "a" player died during a fight but "both", damn that's so drastic.
