Saleng Festival/Tree Festival for "Only One Earth"

Last weekend, the city held a parade for these Tree Carts. These are carts from both private and government agencies. This is in celebration of the Saleng Festival here in Baguio City.

"Saleng" is from the pine trees that grow around here. It catches fire easily that's why it's used as fire starter.

This year's Tree Festival is in accordance to the theme of World Environment Day which is "Only One Earth." The carts are made from recyclable materials or decorated/upcycled them.

After the parade, these carts were then displayed in Malcolm Square.

I haven't witnessed the parade but I saw these displayed already during my weekend walk so I took some photos.

These carts not only had trees on them but also other plants as well but the main feature should be the tree.

I went out earlier today to check if winners were already chosen but there were none declared. I guess it will be determined after a week of display.

First prize will receive PHP25,000 (USD460). Second prize will be PHP18,750 (USD345). Finally, the third prize is PHP12,500 (USD230).

Because there were no winners yet, I decided to take more photos.

There were 20 entries I think. I don't know what the criteria for judging is but if I base it on the recyclable/upcycle part, I'd go for the ice cream cart. You can see that on this video.

This Saleng Festival is also in line with our country's environmental month and National Arbor Day this month. More environmental-themed activities will be held until the next four months. Through these efforts, the city would like to raise awareness to take better care of our nature, our environment, our earth. We only have one Earth so let's protect it.
