My Actifit Report Card: April 14 2022

Well, today I finished God in the Dock by C. S. Lewis. His writing is really good, so even when there was some repetition (it’s a collection of letters/essays/speeches) there usually is some value to it. Of course, he’s a layperson and some of his musings should be taken with a grain of salt, but I didn’t see anything fundamentally wrong with his reasoning. He probably has more proficiency in classical languages and Scripture than I do, in any case.

One of the things that is really interesting is the case against female pastors that he makes, which is very Jungian even if Lewis himself would not fit the description more broadly. I’m personally rather ambivalent in the matter–I’m not entirely convinced by the girlboss arguments that make a utilitarian case for women in ministry, but the arguments against them are not particularly convincing either.

Some of this might have to do with the strictness of each denomination in how they choose leaders. For the Catholics, who have celibacy as a requirement, there’s perhaps a stronger case to be made that the priest is supposed to embody a particular archetype and has to have certain characteristics. For people in a Protestant sect like mine, where our only requirement is a vague “good character” (and now people more liberal than my own denomination do not even require that!) it’s little surprise that we ordain women.

And, of course, my church is co-pastored by a married couple.

I think there’s an interesting case to be made from history that women definitely have a role in the church, but Lewis’ argument against women as priests is more compelling than my own from my perspective, and I’m fairly open about my Christianity being non-denominational in the sense that I would switch to another church if I felt my own had errors in doctrine.

All the same, I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

Writing today was relatively productive. I posted some Year of a Million Words stuff to my writing blog (@kwilleywrites, though it’s on a one-week delay to prevent SEO issues), and got an essay done for my Substack.

Didn’t get much done on Carrion Birds or editing the book on libertarianism, but I did get some work done for the freelance client so I think we’re at a good point on that. Still have some other stuff to do before the job’s done, but I got the hard parts done and it’s just slotting in some images (and probably also text alterations, I suspect).

Physical activity was down because I slept in to catch up on some sleep, but I got an appointment to go see a specialist about stomach stuff. Fingers crossed, they’ll be able to give me some idea of what to do going forward to move toward a diagnosis/treatment.

Good spirits. Productive. Tired. God is good, life is good.
