My Actifit Report Card: March 30 2022
Feeling better today, but I still have some physical stuff lingering around. Had a really hard time getting to sleep last night, in part because of the physical symptoms I’ve been having, but feeling good is always nice.
Writing-wise, I’ve had sort of a slow day. That’s not to say that it’s entirely wasted, but I only wrote about 3000 words. I’m hoping to hit 300k words written by the end of March (for the whole year so far), which I might pull off tomorrow.
Didn’t get the podcast re-recorded, but I should have time to do that tomorrow. It’s about how stories start, and one of the issues is that I think I had the structure a little wrong.
I had been talking about the start of stories through the perspective of pacing and framing, but I don’t think that’s fully correct. I think it’s better to think of it as lead-up (e.g. in media res and ab ovo, to use the classical terms), pacing, and framing. That should give a more fruitful starting point and lead to a better episode.
I also hope to do an article about the wealth tax tomorrow. It’s a particularly nasty idea because any attempt to tax unrealized capital gains is like trying to harvest eggs from inside the chicken. It might work, but odds are you’ll get less and wind up with a dead chicken.
The worst economic crises in history occur precisely because of the consumption of investment, and we do not want to make that a public policy position. For instance, if you have crop failure you wind up consuming seed grain, which causes a sustained multi-year famine.
Right now we’ve got absolutely awful economic situations going on with inflation, and adding a wealth tax on just consumes investment that was already being pushed toward a flight to real assets and elevated time preferences. Forcing liquidation of investment means that the value of stocks is going to fall tremendously, and I suspect there will be structures to how the tax works that keep it from having a major impact on revenue even though it creates a massive disincentive to earn wealth.
Did my review of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands today, so that was posted over on @loreshapergames for everyone to see. It was rather long, so it consumed most of my writing energy for the day, but it’s still good.
