Algunos contratiempos con la señal y ocupaciones propias relacionadas con mi jornada laboral, habían afectado el momento de compartir con ustedes, mis impresiones sobre el partido que marca el final de esta gran temporada. Las Nitto ATP finals se han robado el show con un cierre por todo lo alto, tanto en emociones y resultados, como en la cifra de dinero que se adjudicó el campeón de este año, alguien que ha pasado por momentos difíciles para jugar, pero que ha sabido aprovechar cada oportunidad, sumando puntos y títulos en los momentos decisivos; por supuesto me refiero al gran Novak Djokovic.

Some setbacks with the signal and my own occupations related to my work day, had affected the moment to share with you my impressions about the match that marks the end of this great season. The Nitto ATP finals have stolen the show with a great closing, both in emotions and results, as in the amount of money that was awarded to this year's champion, someone who has gone through difficult times to play, but who has taken every opportunity, adding points and titles in the decisive moments; of course I am referring to the great Novak Djokovic.

Recuerdo que hubo críticas con su clasificación a estas finales ATP, aunque su título en Wimbledon y su permanencia en el ranking le avalaron para participar; no obstante, el serbio es un inminente favorito en cualquier torneo en el que participa, dada su excelsa condición física y técnica a lo largo de los años. Ya había comentado lo especial que es para mí esta competición, por el espectáculo que ofrece ver desde el primer día, a los mejores del año enfrentándose entre sí. El serbio iniciaba enfrentando a Stefanos Tsitsipás, a quien ha vencido en sus últimos 9 partidos desde 2019 y esta vez no fue distinto.

I remember that there was criticism with his classification to these ATP finals, although his title at Wimbledon and his permanence in the ranking endorsed him to participate; however, the Serb is an imminent favorite in any tournament in which he participates, given his excellent physical and technical condition over the years. I had already commented how special this competition is for me, for the spectacle that offers to see from the first day, the best of the year facing each other. The Serb started facing Stefanos Tsitsipas, whom he has beaten in his last 9 matches since 2019 and this time was no different.

En su segundo cotejo del grupo rojo, tomó revancha del ruso Andrey Rublev, también en sets consecutivos y lo mismo sucedería ante la primer raqueta de Rusia, Daniil Medvedev (quien sería el único en arrebatarle un set). Seguiría el serbio dando cátedra ante el estadounidense Taylor Fritz, para citarse con el noruego Casper Ruud, en la gran final de este domingo. Ruud por su parte, hizo respetar su condición de tercer mejor raqueta del orbe; pasando la prueba de fuego ante Félix Auger-Aliassime en el debut. Fue interesante ver a Casper superando a Fritz y Rublev, porque enfrentó a los mismos rivales que Novak y perdió solamente con un Nadal ya eliminado, en un encuentro de trámite.

Ruud también ha tenido una temporada impresionante y si la del año pasado fue buenísima (con 5 títulos), en ésta ha llegado a un nuevo nivel de juego. Quizás puedan contrastar sus 2 trofeos de este año sobre arcilla; pero hay que considerar que el de Oslo perdió ante dos leyendas (Nadal y Djokovic) y contra el actual número 1 Carlos Alcaraz (2 veces), todas estas derrotas sobre pistas rápidas.

In all honesty, I must comment that despite being aware of how difficult it is for Casper to face Novak's speed game (he has lost all his 5 matches for a reason); I was still giving my vote of confidence to the Scandinavian. Ruud has also had an impressive season and if last year's season was very good (with 5 titles), in this one he has reached a new level of play. Maybe his 2 trophies this year on clay can contrast; but we have to consider that the Oslo player lost against two legends (Nadal and Djokovic) and against the current number 1 Carlos Alcaraz (2 times), all these defeats on fast courts.

El detalle a tomar en cuenta, es que el camino que ha recorrido para llegar a cada uno de esos partidos finales, se ha topado con lo mejor de lo mejor y ha caído solamente ante los jugadores fuera de serie. Entonces es claro que a Casper le falta muy poco para dar ese salto y quemar esa etapa. Seguí el partido desde mi teléfono móvil mientras iba rumbo al trabajo; Casper se estaba quedando mucho en el centro de la pista y el serbio colocaba con facilidad su primer servicio; esta situación es muy favorable para Novak y le permite coger confianza desde el arranque, una sensación que lo hace imbatible (primero en lo mental, al sentirse quien lleva la batuta y segundo en el pulso, ya que ensaya libremente sus tiros hacia todas las áreas de la pista). El único desliz de Djokovic era verle en algunos pasajes, algo ofuscado y con su rostro enrojecido, sus manos siguen temblando un poco pero lograba incorporarse para seguir en lo que mejor hace, batallar.

The only slip of Djokovic was to see him in some passages, somewhat obfuscated and with his face reddened, his hands still shaking a little but he managed to get up to continue what he does best, battle.

Djokovic played so comfortably that he made his shots to the most difficult sides of the court, even though he had the whole court open to place the ball; I call that confidence!

A partir de allí, ya parecía todo decidido; su tenaz juego de forehand y backhand en paralelo (sin respuesta), me daba esa impresión. Casper no arriesgó lo suficiente, tuvo que probar más variantes en su juego, como tiros a diferentes distancias y usar su drop shot para hacer correr a Novak, pero no lo hizo. Solo se limitó a seguir el ritmo de juego de su rival y lo pagó muy caro; Casper no me mostró su capacidad de contragolpear y eso es algo que lo diferencia de Alcaraz, quien si se atreve a buscar y generar el desequilibrio ante sus contrincantes. Ruud no incomodaba al gran Novak y eso le facilitó el camino a la victoria.

Casper didn't take enough risks, he had to try more variations in his game, like shots at different distances and use his drop shot to make Novak run, but he didn't do it. Casper did not show me his ability to counterattack and that is something that differentiates him from Alcaraz, who dares to look for and generate the imbalance against his opponents. Ruud did not bother the great Novak and that made his way to victory easier.

Djokovic cerraría con un ace en su primer oportunidad de ganar; eso hace aun más grande al campeón, definir como y cuando se debe hacer. El marcador final 7-5 y 6-3 en 92 minutos de trote para el gran maestro. De las 7 finales que disputó este año, Novak logró concretar en 5 de ellas, perdiendo solo en Belgrado ante Andrey Rublev y en París con el joven Holger Rune. Cierra así Djokovic, un año difícil pero que cierra con el dulce sabor de la victoria; igualando a "Su majestad" con 6 títulos ATP Finals y rompiendo el récord del mayor premio en metálico con 4.7 millones de dólares, por haber cerrado invicto el certamen.

Con luz verde para jugar el próximo Australia Open, Novak sigue siendo el favorito al título, por encima de todos, incluso de Alcaraz. Su cierre victorioso en 2022 le permite mantenerse en el top 5 del ranking (Nº5) y amén de que mantenga su condición física, promete ser un 2023 promisorio; tanto para el serbio como para el tenis en general, porque si Novak Djokovic se mantiene sano, todos los récords tiemblan ante una campaña de ensueño para el gran maestro del 2022.

With the green light to play the next Australia Open, Novak is still the favorite for the title, ahead of everyone, even Alcaraz. His victorious closing in 2022 allows him to remain in the top 5 of the ranking (No. 5) and as long as he maintains his physical condition, it promises to be a promising 2023; both for the Serb and for tennis in general, because if Novak Djokovic stays healthy, all records tremble before a dream campaign for the grandmaster of 2022.
