Marc-Andrea Huesler, Rompiendo predicciones. // ATP Winston-Salem [Esp - Eng]

Siempre es grato ver atletas que dan la sorpresa, en un torneo en el que se rompen las predicciones que generan los datos estadísticos; cuando esto sucede, lo percibo como un vaso de agua fresca en un día caluroso. Tanto en la vida como en el deporte, los eventos inesperados que cambian la rutina, son más que bienvenidos, son refrescantes; y todo esto se genera en un momento discreto, en el ATP 250 de Winston Salem, que tiene muy poca cobertura dada la importancia del venidero Grand Slam en New York.

It is always pleasant to see athletes who surprise in a tournament where the predictions generated by the statistical data are broken; when this happens, I perceive it as a glass of cool water on a hot day. Both in life and in sport, unexpected events that change the routine are more than welcome, are refreshing; and all this is generated at a discreet moment, at the ATP 250 in Winston Salem, which has very little coverage given the importance of the upcoming Grand Slam in New York.

En este caso, les comento sobre uno de los mejores partidos que se realizaron el día de ayer, en la jornada correspondiente a los 8vos de final, del abierto categoría ATP-250 antes mencionado, que desarrolla su edición Nº 41 (luego de varias modificaciones) en las instalaciones del Wake Forest Tennis Center, en Carolina del Norte (USA). Allí se citaban el suizo proveniente de la clasificación, Marc-Andrea Huesler (Nº102) y el bielorruso Ilia Ivashka (Nº51); y quien era el campeón defensor del evento.

In this case, I would like to comment on one of the best matches that took place yesterday, in the round of 16 of the ATP-250 Open, which is in its 41st edition (after several modifications) at the Wake Forest Tennis Center, in North Carolina (USA). The Swiss player coming from the qualifiers, Marc-Andrea Huesler (Nº102) and the Belarusian Ilia Ivashka (Nº51), who was the defending champion of the event, met there.

Este era el primer enfrentamiento entre ambos, donde el favoritismo se inclinaba del lado de Ivashka, porque a pesar que no había conseguido actuaciones destacadas recientemente, es el atleta con mejor posición en el ranking y de mayor experiencia en la cancha; pero Marc nos ha recordado que en el deporte no hay nada escrito, siendo el segundo tenista helvético mejor rankeado, tras Henri Laaksonen quien ocupa el puesto 84, posterior a la salida del ranking del histórico Roger Federer.

This was the first confrontation between the two, where the favoritism was leaning to Ivashka's side, because although he had not achieved outstanding performances recently, he is the athlete with the best position in the ranking and more experience on the court; but Marc has reminded us that in sport there is nothing written, being the second best ranked Swiss tennis player, after Henri Laaksonen who occupies the 84th position, after the departure of the historic Roger Federer from the ranking.

Huesler inició con buen pie desde la "Qualy", donde superó al australiano Mathew Ebder (2-0) y al nipón Mochizuki (2-0); para luego citarse con el sueco Mikael Ymer, quien fuese finalista el año pasado y que también dejó atrás por 2-0; es decir, Marc iba invicto y no se había topado con rival que pusiera en peligro su servicio y ataque de zurda. Así fue como llegó a los 8vos ante Ilia, que había perdido 4 de sus últimos 6 encuentros, pero que demostró su jerarquía ante en alemán Peter Gojowczyk, en sets corridos.

Una de las primeras impresiones que me dejó el inicio de las acciones, fue el saque raudo y seguro del suizo, con notable insistencia hacia el área central de la pista (T); y en contraparte, el bielorruso mostró algo de inseguridad al servicio, no solo por las 3 dobles faltas del primer set, sino porque pude notarlo conteniendo su fuerza al sacar, entonces me pregunté ¿Será alguna lesión o es inseguridad? Al parecer más de lo segundo, porque en los intercambios también prefirió buscar colocación en lugar de potencia.

One of the first impressions that left me at the beginning of the actions, was the quick and sure serve of the Swiss, with remarkable insistence towards the central area of the court (T); and on the other hand, the Belarusian showed some insecurity when serving, not only because of the 3 double faults of the first set, but because I could notice him containing his strength when serving, so I wondered, is it an injury or insecurity? Apparently more of the latter, because in the exchanges he also preferred to look for placement instead of power.

La única ventaja entonces, era que Ilia no había permitido quiebres, aunque salvó una bola para set en el doceavo game, para luego disputar el tie break. Otra doble falta inoportuna, se convirtió en ventaja para el suizo; Marc atacaba con velocidad y se movía por toda la pista, exigiendo a su rival. Mientras Ivashka acertaba tiros ganadores, pero no los suficientes para representar un peligro. La diferencia en la velocidad de saque era de hasta 20 mph entre uno y otro, por lo que Marc pudo concretar la ventaja y ganar por 7-6 (2).

The only advantage then, was that Ilia had not allowed any breaks, although he saved a ball for a set in the twelfth game, and then played the tie break. No obstante, el nacido en Minsk pudo ajustarse a la velocidad del rival y concretar sendos quiebres al 6to y 8vo games. Una de sus fortalezas fue recuperar la seguridad al sacar y se acopló para acertar su forehand cruzado invertido. El juego corto también parecía sonreírle, con voleas efectivas desde la red; aunque al momento de rematar con su smash, lo hacía con suavidad y creo que le hacía falta sentir la adrenalina de acertar un mate fuerte y limpio, es algo que siempre le sube el ánimo a un tenista en competencia.

However, the Minsk-born player was able to adjust to his opponent's speed and break in the 6th and 8th games. Siempre es importante tener vías de escape, para Ivashka esta fue una, sobre todo para cortar las rachas de puntos consecutivos. Verle ganar por 6-3 para igualar el partido, fue positivo y digno de aplausos. Aunque lo haya echado a perder más adelante con un llamado a los médicos, que pareció más para enfriar el pulso de Marc, que por sus molestias físicas y que produjo algún abucheo desde las gradas.

Sacar y atacar a la red o recibir y subir a cerrar espacios, fueron las constantes. Ivashka se veía superado en velocidad y estrategia; mostrando debilidades en su defensa y sobre todo en la consecución de soluciones definitivas, para detener el tenis fluido que había conseguido desarrollar Huesler. Ilia parecía desinflado con su esfuerzo de forzar a duras penas, el tie break.

Marc-Andrea did very well in the final games, where there were no breaks of serve, but in which he had more control of the offense. Serving and attacking the net or receiving and going up to close spaces, were the constants. Ivashka was outclassed in speed and strategy; showing weaknesses in his defense and especially in finding definitive solutions to stop the fluid tennis that Huesler had managed to develop. Ilia seemed deflated with his effort to force the tie break.

Otro mini-quiebre lo puso arriba a Marc, por 5-2 y luego el 6-2, con 4 puntos para partido. Fue demasiado para Ilia y el encuentro terminó con una volea cruzada del helvético. El reloj marcaba 2 horas con 26 minutos y el trabajo estaba hecho.

Este gran triunfo se traduce en una especie de "back to back" para Huesler, que logra eliminar al campeón y sub-campeón del año pasado y pone en alto, la bandera que Roger hizo común en cada torneo que participó. Ahora Marc se medirá en cuartos de final, al británico Jack Draper; en lo que visualizo como una batalla de zurdos talentosos. El joven Jack, tuvo dos presentaciones más que convincentes, ante Fabio Fognini y Dominic Thiem respectivamente. Será un partido emocionante, por la agresividad que ambos vienen demostrando y que prefiero ver sin ningún favoritismo; porque a veces, el tenis es mejor, cuando no esperamos tanto de los atletas y solo disfrutamos del espectáculo.

This great victory translates into a kind of "back to back" for Huesler, who manages to eliminate last year's champion and runner-up and puts up the flag that Roger made common in every tournament he participated. Now Marc will face in the quarterfinals, the British Jack Draper; in what I visualize as a battle of talented left-handers. The young Jack had two very convincing performances against Fabio Fognini and Dominic Thiem respectively. It will be an exciting match, because of the aggressiveness that both have been showing and that I prefer to see without any favoritism; because sometimes, tennis is better when we do not expect so much from the athletes and we just enjoy the show.
