¡Las canas se respetan! // John Isner en el ATP Masters 1000 de Cincinnati. [Esp - Eng]

Con el séptimo torneo de maestros del año, específicamente la edición Nº 124 del ATP Masters de Cincinnati, estamos en una semana crucial para el calendario y para los atletas que quieren mantenerse entre los 100 mejores del ranking (lista emblemática durante la temporada); y que ha visto como algunos nombres se han movido de su puesto habitual. Por ejemplo, el top ten ha tenido más movimiento de lo normal en estas últimas semanas; y la lucha por ascender y mantenerse en los puestos privilegiados, está muy reñida.

With the seventh Masters tournament of the year, specifically the 124th edition of the Cincinnati ATP Masters, we are in a crucial week for the calendar and for athletes who want to stay in the top 100 ranking (emblematic list during the season); and that has seen some names have moved from their usual position. For example, the top ten has had more movement than usual in recent weeks; and the fight to move up and stay in the privileged positions, is very close.

No obstante, uno de los nombres que se ha hecho común, en la lista de los mejores 50 a lo largo de estos años, es el del estadounidense John Isner. El veterano reconocido por su fuerte saque y su gran estatura (2,08 mts); está teniendo una gran semana en su país y sencillamente no deja de sorprenderme, por la capacidad física que mantiene año tras año y con la que ha logrado incluso, batir el récord de mayor cantidad de aces (saques directos) de la historia de este fascinante deporte.

However, one of the names that has become common in the list of the best 50 over the years is that of American John Isner. The veteran known for his strong serve and his great height (2.08 mts) is having a great week in his country and simply never ceases to amaze me, for the physical capacity he maintains year after year and with which he has even managed to beat the record for most aces (direct serves) in the history of this fascinating sport.

El gran John (Big John), como es conocido en el circuito; comenzó en Cincinnati su lucha por mantenerse en el puesto número 50, donde ha permanecido durante 13 temporadas consecutivas y a sus 37 años de edad, no resulta nada sencillo de lograr. Sin embargo, sus triunfos ante el francés Benjamin Bonzi (2-1), el polaco Hubert Hurkacz (2-1) y hoy ante su compatriota Sebastian Korda (2-1); le han permitido seguir en esta lista privilegiada, por lo que queda de año.

Big John (Big John), as he is known in the circuit, began in Cincinnati his struggle to stay at number 50, where he has remained for 13 consecutive seasons and at 37 years of age, it is not easy to achieve. However, his victories against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (2-1), Polish Hubert Hurkacz (2-1) and today against his compatriot Sebastian Korda (2-1), have allowed him to remain on this privileged list for the remainder of the year.

Me gustó ver a John jugando con una motivación extra, aún a sabiendas de que su joven rival (Korda tiene 22 años), lo superaba en su duelo personal con 2 victorias consecutivas; y si perdía este partido saldría del top 50 de manera inevitable. Vi el partido y de verdad reconozco el esfuerzo de Isner, quien incluso se movió muy bien en la pista dura del Lindner Family Tennis Center, para solventar las situaciones de riesgo que tuvo ante "Sebi".

I liked to see John playing with an extra motivation, even knowing that his young rival (Korda is 22 years old), surpassed him in his personal duel with 2 consecutive victories; and if he lost this match he would inevitably leave the top 50. I watched the match and I really recognize the effort of Isner, who even moved very well on the hard court of the Lindner Family Tennis Center, to solve the risky situations he had against "Sebi".

El partido transcurrió rápidamente desde el primer set, en los que suelo ver prolongaciones al tie break cuando juega Isner (por algo ha jugado 6 desempates en estos 3 encuentros); pero lo que observé fue la manera como ensayó algunos tiros, cuando estuvo arriba en el marcador; dejó dos dorp shot en la red durante el 5to game, incluso salvó un break point, pero luego pudo cerrar con dos saques casi invisibles a 134 mph. También lo hiso en el 7mo y 9no, así que le vi muy seguro.

The match went quickly from the first set, in which I usually see tie break extensions when Isner plays (he has played 6 tie breaks in these 3 matches for a reason); but what I noticed was the way he tried some shots when he was up on the scoreboard; he left two dorp shots in the net during the 5th game, even saved a break point, but then he was able to close with two almost invisible serves at 134 mph. He also did it in the 7th and 9th, so I saw him very confident.

Lo que más aplaudí de Isner, fue que se atrevió a tomar riesgos en el momento crucial, durante el tie break; dos devoluciones en paralelo (una de backhand y otra de forehand) que dejaron a Korda como un espectador más; con eso, el experimentado John se adjudicó el primer set por 7-6 (3) en 47 minutos. Pero en la segunda manga, el gigante incurrió en 7 errores no forzados, con los que cedió los quiebres al 2so, 4to y 6to games. Sebastian ganaba 6-1 en solo 29 minutos y forzaba el tercer set.

What I applauded most about Isner, was that he dared to take risks at the crucial moment, during the tie break; two parallel returns (one backhand and another forehand) that left Korda as a spectator; with that, the experienced John won the first set 7-6 (3) in 47 minutes. But in the second set, the giant incurred 7 unforced errors, giving up breaks in the 2nd, 4th and 6th games. Sebastian won 6-1 in only 29 minutes and forced the third set.

Esa tercera vuelta, fue una gran batalla desde el aspecto táctico; sobre todo del lado de Isner, dado que estuvo colocando mejor sus tiros de forehand cruzado. También porque pudo aguantar los feroces ataques de su rival, que intentó moverlo lado a lado pero el veterano respondió al reto; no solo para mantener el ritmo, sino para atacar a los flancos y al contrapié. Isner pudo acertar su drive al tercer golpe, aunque su arma principal fue la colocación minuciosa del servicio.

That third round, was a great battle from the tactical aspect; especially on Isner's side, since he was placing his forehand crosscourt shots better. Also because he was able to withstand the fierce attacks of his opponent, who tried to move him side to side but the veteran responded to the challenge; not only to keep the pace, but to attack the flanks and counterpunch. Isner was able to hit his drive on the third shot, although his main weapon was the meticulous placement of his serve.

Esa manera de redimensionar su saque, fue algo clave para ganar este encuentro; porque a esa edad no se puede depender solo de la fuerza del servicio, sino que ha logrado (desde hace bastante tiempo) controlar su pulso, para ubicar la pelota en el lugar preciso. Ese saque abierto a la línea que sacaba a Sebi de la cancha, para luego cruzarle el forehand a la otra esquina, fue épico. Luego le variaba la distancia, uno saque corto, el siguiente a la T y luego otro abierto pero largo, lo tenía loco ja,ja,ja.

That way of resizing his serve, was key to win this match, because at that age you can not rely only on the strength of the service, but has managed (for quite some time) to control his pulse, to place the ball in the right place. That open serve to the line that took Sebi out of the court, to then cross the forehand to the other corner, was epic. Then he would vary the distance, one short serve, the next to the T and then another open but long, he had him crazy ha,ha,ha,ha.

Aunque Isner amenazó en el 10mo game, todo se definiría nuevamente en el tie break, donde ambos cometerían varios errores (John golpeando por enésima vez con el borde de su raqueta y Korda dejándola en la red); fue valiente Isner al jugar tiros cruzados
sobre la línea, pero a Sebastian le faltó definición, le faltó un tiro matador e imparable (tuvo que jugar más corto, cuando lo hizo acertó); pero decidió jugarle de tú a tú al gran John. El partido cerraría con otro 7-6 (4) en poco más de dos horas muy intensas.

Although Isner threatened in the 10th game, everything would be defined again in the tie break, where both would make several mistakes (John hitting for the umpteenth time with the edge of his racquet and Korda leaving it in the net); Isner was brave to play crosscourt shots on the line, but Sebastian lacked definition, he lacked a killer and unstoppable shot (he had to play shorter, when he did he hit it right); but he decided to play one on one with the great John. The match would close with another 7-6 (4) in just over two very intense hours.

Avanza así Isner a los cuartos de final, donde enfrentará al griego Stefanos Tsistipás por un cupo a semifinales. Sin embargo, la tarea está hecha porque con esta gran victoria, John sigue en el puesto número 50 del ranking. Con sus 20 aces ahora suma 69 en 3 partidos, pero también acumula 6 tie breaks, lo que se traduce en más horas de juego y mayor desgaste físico. Su récord ante Stefanos es negativo (2-4), pero John sigue demostrando su jerarquía dentro de este deporte, ante jugadores más jóvenes, a quienes se les debe recordar que ¡las canas se respetan!

Isner advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face Greek Stefanos Tsistipás for a place in the semifinals. However, the task is done because with this great victory, John remains at number 50 in the ranking. With his 20 aces he now has 69 in 3 matches, but he also accumulates 6 tie breaks, which translates into more hours of play and more physical wear and tear. His record against Stefanos is negative (2-4), but John continues to demonstrate his hierarchy in this sport, against younger players, who should be reminded that gray hair is respected!
