Excelente arranque de Garín. // Miami Open Masters 1000. [Esp - Eng]

Luego de algunos altibajos en su consolidada carrera deportiva, el chileno Cristian Garín está dando muestras de haber recuperado esa garra que lo caracteriza en los momentos de la verdad, a la hora de definir partidos difíciles. A pesar de haber iniciado este año con actuaciones poco convincentes; y de perder muchos puestos en el ranking (saliendo del top 20 que ocupó durante varios meses), el ariqueño vuelve a la batalla en las pistas duras norteamericanas, primero disputando 6 partidos de buen nivel en Indian Wells; y ahora comenzando con buen pie en el segundo Masters 1000 del año en Miami.

After some ups and downs in his consolidated sports career, the Chilean Cristian Garín is showing signs of having recovered that grit that characterizes him in moments of truth, when it comes to defining difficult matches. El popular "Gago" pasó eximido las pruebas de la clasificación ante el japonés Uchida y su compatriota Alejandro Tabilo sin ceder set alguno, ganando así el derecho a enfrentar en primera ronda al estadounidense Marcos Giron (N°71), un atleta con experiencia en estas pistas y que en sus mejores momentos, puede poner en aprietos a sus rivales con su buen manejo del drive cruzado. Y aunque el chileno lo había superado en su único enfrentamiento hace 2 años, pude notar a un Garín algo nervioso en el inicio del primer set, regalando dobles faltas y dejando tiros muy largos, algo poco habitual en él.

Estos detalles técnicos fueron corregidos con un fuerte servicio del chileno y por su oportuno ataque de drive invertido, con el que logró quebrar al 5to game. Considero que Giron desperdició tiros claros, buscando colocarlos muy abiertos o al intentar imprimir mayor fuerza de la necesaria. Era clara la fortaleza física del californiano y cuando pudo afinar su puntería, generó un peligro inminente para Gago. Sin embargo, el chileno logró salvar 2 bolas de quiebre para cerrar con el 6-4 en 46 minutos. Marcos ajustó su fuerte forehand y pudo quebrar al 6to y 9no games de la segunda manga, para igualar a set por lado en apenas 30 minutos.

Si hay algo que disfruto de un partido de tenis, es de la competitividad de los atletas, de que luchen sin tregua para demostrar que no están allí por casualidad. Entonces las expectativas durante el 3er set se elevaron con la emoción de ver quién se impondría. No obstante, Garín también recordó sus partidos anteriores, donde superó incluso a Casper Ruud en Indian Wells; de manera que sabe cómo sortear los problemas en la pista. Por eso le vi poner en apuros a su rival desde el 1er game, metiendo presión sobre la red y atacando sin cesar. Sobre todo saliendo de aprietos con marcadores ajustados, lo que se traduce en un buen manejo de la presión del momento.

Estoy ansioso por ver mañana, el potencial y velocidad de Báez ante la fortaleza y temple del chileno, que podría subir puestos importantes en el escalafón. El escenario se muestra perfecto en este torneo de Maestros, que nos puede deparar muchas sorpresas durante estas dos semanas.
